Can't Login As Regular User After Trying...

I can't login to command prompt redhat as a regular user. The screen flickers for a millasecond and then goes back to the login screen; there's output, but it comes out too quickly, I can't read it. I can still login as root, so I sould assume it has to do with permissions or something of the sort, and created another user to try; that didn't work. This was all after a failed attempt of installing apt and mplayer. Any idea's?

Look at the logfiles to see what's actually going
on ... I don't think Mplayer would mess with
permissions, and I've never used apt (and I
don't use any other package managers, either,
for that matter).

where are the log files? that's what I've been looking for.

/var/log
if it's a problem that is system-wide.
ls -ltr to get the most recent files at
the bottom of the list.

~/.*
if they are user specific
( less ~/.xsession-errors , e.g. )

what am I looking for now, I'm in the file called 'messages' and I can't find anything that has to do with 'drdroid' and 'test' not being able to login.

I've had problems in the past with pam changing file permissions

ok, I figured out that I can su to another user... but I still cannot login as one... and I don't know what to look for in errors. What should I do?
