I downloaded and built the 2.6.1 kernel following the instructions in the README file. The only thing I did diffrently is untar the sources in the /usr/scr/linux/ area. The readme said that can mess things up but I don't know if it did.

I rebooted and the kernel worked great and I tried to startx. Nvidia drivers did not work so I tried to run the .bin driver file as root and that didn't work because it had an error about not finding important files. This makes me think I may have messed them up by untaring in the /usr/src/linux area. How do I correct this?

The modem under 2.6 seems to work fine(lights are on) and KPPP dials fine but hangs and fails at the part were it tries to log onto the network.

I had to use my Slackware CD to go back to the 2.4.22 kernel.

Please help as I need the NVIDIA drivers and the ability to use the internet.

PS: I read the kernel for newbies post and the 2.6 kernel posts and they don't seem to help.

Well, for one do you have the lastest NVIDIA driver? The latest one that was released will work with the 2.6.x kernel. Secondly, if you think that you messed up by not using the /usr/src/linux-2.6.1/ directory then fix it!! Untar into there, and make the /usr/src/linux as symbolic link to there and recompile.
