Hi, I'm a newbie. I've decide to create my LFS system, for personal pleasure and interest.
I'm using Virtual Box, on win7, and the LFS live cd, and offcourse the lfs book. (followed step by step)
My first question is about packages and patches (chapters 3.2 and 3.3): I must download them, but how have I to download them? From the virtual machine? Ok, don't kill me: I download them in win7... and I've the little suspect that it's wrong.
LFS book doesn't explain how and where download the files. So, can u help me?
Secondly, I've encountered the same problem of other user here, in binutils configuring step. I don't have the right permission for:
Code:
mkdir -v ../binutils-build
cd ../binutils-build
so I passed with root permission. Was that correct?
(I found this topic: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ep-4175411402/
but I didn't understand very well)
Also to install the patch, system could not find the files.. that are on win.
I've already a linux distro, ubuntu, but it's on my notebook. I thought that a notebook doesn't have a good computing power.. So I used virtualbox on windows..
Which version of LFS should I download? I took the live cd from official site (http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/livecd/download.html).
U suggest to take a no-live-cd version?
The the steps on that page will make the tarballs and patches flow into your sources directory and get verified. All while you sit there and watch.
P.S.: I agree heartily with the recommendation to ditch the unnecessary handicaps of 1) using an ancient version of LFS, and 2) building it in a VM. But of course do what you think is best.
Ok ok, if u tell me that ubuntu is good, it's perfect. But I don't understand how build LFS using linux (ubuntu in our case).. I must create a new partition, directly, without using virtual machine?
Ok i have never used virtual box but have seen problems with it. saying that ppl have built lfs using virtualbox without any problems, To me it just seems less problomatic to make a dedicated partition to build in.
