How do I find out what kind of sound card I have (lspci didn't work)

Hi all

Found this computer in a dumpster, so I have no motherboard documentation. The sound doesn't work, which I want to change. I don't know if the sound card is built in or separate. I have no idea what I'm looking at with regards to hardware. What I'm wondering is how in linux I can determine what kind of sound card I have. Or even if someone is adventurous enough to attempt an explanation for looking in the tower, I'm open to that. I have run lspci as root in both Slackware 10.2 and Knoppix 3.4 with no luck (as in, nothing looked remotely like a sound card).

Well.... if the CPU is old enough :} it may be an ISA card.
Check the BIOS settings for starters, you could also try
running pnpdump.

You're going to have to open up the case to look inside at the PCI and ISA slots and cards. Sound on the 440BX motherboards is NOT integrated on the motherboard. (I have a computer with this type of motherboard which is how I know this.)

If a card is installed it could have become loose in the slot; so you may have to take the card out and reseat it in the slot again. BTW If this is the case then it could be the reason why the OS cannot see the sound card.

Hm, I have a 440BX motherboard right here and it has integrated sound.

If it's an OEM computer you might goto the manufacturers site and search there.
