chicks?

what an attention grabbing title! (even though it could mean an entire discourse about the topic of slightly deranged teenage poultry holding kitchen choppers hostage...)

but sadly, no. this thread is about a comment made in another thread that chicks dig "dorks" who Linux (yes, think of that as a verb).

i think the only chick who allows herself to dig cross-eyed glazed-looking geeks is probably stephanie ;) ...

talk about female chilvary... who says it doesn't exist?

MasterC 06-16-2002 05:07 AM

Linux is cooler than most chicks anyway. They who do not Linux are the dorks.

You had a statement there, but there's a word missing or two, what heck was it?

Hey, come'on, I'm not cross-eyed and I doubt you are either... glazed-looking? Only at work and four hours after work starting on Thursdays.

Yeah, I think the women Linux users on the planet pretty much are Steph and Isajera (on hiatus; she's suffering from "having a real job" syndrome.) I'm 0 for 3 on ex-girlfriends who dug my hobby. Anyone else?

Oh that's just evil. If that happens, then what's next? I'll tell you, the adverb form: linuxly, and then... pretty soon we're off on an entire prefix-fest, as if -nix as a suffix for everything wasn't bad enough: linuxilicious, linuxittude. No, no no no no no. Demon bad, microsoft bad, basket-full of kittens in a blender bad.

Cheers,

I think "moo" (or "mu") is the only possible response here.

while i won't argue with the second statement, the first is ahem... i think still debatable... lol. after all, it's all a matter of perspective.

yea i know we're not cross-eyed fin... just pulling out the ole stereotypical glowing bogeyman from the dark dank corner of the room :p
as for glazed looking, well, yea at work all the time and also if there's a bunch of poultry hanging around...

I'm a chick and I Linux, so does that make me cooler than me? :p

Well, I dont know so much about that. I dont want a guy who looks like a geek or nerd, but it is cool if they like working on computers and Linux and stuff. The most important thing though is that they pay more attention to me than their computer when I need it.. and most of the time those nerds and geeks you stereotypically described would not do that.

In other words... a guy can play with Linux as a hobby, but dont make it his life :)

ah, now we know for sure Torvalds doesn't stand half a chance at some things... :D

tundra 06-17-2002 09:29 AM

and onto my 20th post here on LQ...
ah seems that the tiny stone is starting to avalanche...
well fin, it may not be long before "linux-ing" creeps in to the dictionary... talk about daemon bad. a thesaurus-thumping penguin???

Stephanie_new 06-17-2002 09:54 AM

Aw, Acid.. you broke my little heart :D

And whoever said Torvalds doesnt have a chance... I dont know. He is kinda cute. He is smart too. But I think he would have to pay alot of attention to his computer stuff than I would want.

tundra 06-17-2002 10:08 AM

hur hur... yea probably gal, probably... but maybe you could try to delay the kernel release dates eh? give the ole kernel a run for its money ;)
or you could hang around with me......... :D
hur hur...

Calum 06-17-2002 10:48 AM

what's the definiton of 'Linux" in its verb form? it sounds a bit too ambiguous for me right now... too general. let's narrow it down to what it really means.

Before I actually get offended, I have to know how you thought Stephanie, a fairly obvious female name, could be in fact Stephen. Now that is is odd. Regarding my pic... I would really like to know where you read that thread at.

As far as "digging" Linux goes... Linux does almost everything I need it to without making me feel like I am treated like a complete idiot, as with other vendors (snicker, snicker) software. Plus, it has yet to crash on me for no apparent reason.

Sorry taz. Girls, at least the totally straight ones like me, like a man to be a man. Yeah, it is nice to have a guy be in touch with their feminine side, but not overly so.

Keep in mind... despite the fact we gals gripe, bitch, and complain about "male" things, we still like your gender for the way it is.

thanks guys, Stephanie I'll put up a pic of myself on my website by tonight I am at work, but anyways I was sort of kidding my girlfriend is going to kill me for flirting with anybody but her, so I'll shut up for now - but can you just put a check mark under my name? I am not telling you to put it as an alias in your .bashrc
alias neo77777='cut his_balls_off'

Exactly my point, my last girl was the one who contributed most of the debt... probably why I don't have any relationship right now. I have to build up that credit so I can have one..and make her happy :D

neo77777 06-17-2002 02:33 PM

I'm in a relationship already - I am comitted to my girlfriend (we've been together for so long that there's no difference either it is her llife or mine it's all common now the difference is subtle), and here with LQers, LQ has become like a second family to me, I'm here almost everyday, and when I am not here due to dumb earthlink downtimes I'm missing LQ, I even used up 70 hrs of dial-up (with only 20hrs free - earthlink shutdown my DSL account for some unknown reason and it wasn't up for whole May) privious month to come here and comfort myself in LQ environment.

And I thought I spent too much time here. ;) I am getting better at not spending so much time here on my days off though.

Man, this thread really took a turn in direction. One minute its about chicks and digging linux, then about chicks fighting, then us hitting on our lovely girlie Stephanie, then about money and traveling to England, along with relationships.. then about spending too much time on LQ.

Stephanie_new 06-17-2002 03:23 PM

I dont mind... I am getting alot of attention and flirty advances.

So out of curiosity... how many of you caffeine addicted men actually have no life outside your computer, let alone home?

And Tricky dear, spending time on your wireless LQ connection does not constitute being out :p

First off, which computer, that gets kinda confusing when I've seeded half this town with accounts...

Secondly, what's a life? I work 3-Midnight, so most of my nightlife consists of getting diner at the later night bars with co-workers when all of the day people are so sloshed as to be about to pack it in for the night.

Damn did you ever nail the caffeine addicted nail on the head though. Its time for more coffee, who wants any?

We're still working on that one. the 100 Base-T connection was easy enough, but for wireless we're trying to outfit his kneecap with a pcmcia bridge, its getting ugly.

Lastly, Neo5x7, congrats on making 1k mate, we now have a northeastern addict!!! wooohooo!

Cheers,

Finegan

P.S. tundra, look at what you started.

trickykid 06-17-2002 03:57 PM

Actually I try to get out once a week, usually a Friday or Saturday night hanging out down on 6th street since I work usually 12 hour shifts Saturday thru Tuesday.

Yeah, actually no more wireless in my house, its all hardwired now. :D I just loved being in a 120 degree attic running wires for my roomates connections cause they complained too much about the sorry wireless connection they had. It should have been them running them, but you know, you have to do it yourself if you want it done right. One of them wouldn't know how or what to do and god knows, probably end up falling thru the ceiling.

But yeah, the scheduled operation for the wireless connection in my knee cap is this Wednesday, hopefully it goes well as Dr Finegan is the operating surgeon. :D

Oh and I am not addicted to caffeine, right now its Arizona Green Tea for me.... well, that has caffeine in it.. ok maybe it is the caffeine I am addicted to :)

Luddite roommates too eh there Tricky? I'm down to one, luckily not the previous one that masqueraded as a CS major between clubbing. He was hard to convince of certain things... like surge protectors and the fact that when his 100Mb download of all of the collected MP3s of DJ whocaresreally faulted out in the last 5 Mbs that it had nothing to do with my P1 200 Linux NAT box and probably more to do with IE's download manager.

Offhand, I've got a luddite roommate now that just ordered a new crate that's going to be running off some of the spare hardware I had lying around: NIC, vid card, hard drive, cdrom, you know, what he calls the "little stuff", so my one condition on this "loan" of kit was that I get 5Gb of Linux space and he has to learn enough to stop asking me how to get X started on the living room term. What distro? I'm kinda behind on what crowns the bubblegum distros right now. Mandy? RH?

Oh, and about the operation, I couldn't get stowed away on the airfreight fly-by night to Texas as we planned, but I did borrow the Ga Tech's rail gun, so I'm going to have to ask you to lie down on the roof of your house and hold very still, and ignore the ten penny nails that we shoot into the fireplace, that's just siting everything in. ANyone here offhand know how to properly build a breakaway heat shield for an IBM 9250 TCIC pcmcia bridge?

Cheers,

Finegan

Actually my car might not hack it to outside the perimeter to the nearest wal-mart, 4 miles or so. I'll have to settle for the local corner store, but there are some insane things you can do with Pringles cans these days.

And you want to talk about jealousy, I gotta deal with tundra, who's a bigger smartass than I am!!! what am I going to do, he turned Linux into a verb! I can't hack it anymore, I'm just going to have to re-enroll and get a degree in anthropology or windsurfing or something

Steph getting all of the attention? come on, we dedicated a thread to where have you been... so any more tales of LA; the times I've been there I either stopped at the beach for an hour before heading back, or stopped for gas on the way north to the bay area.

and nice pic bert. lol! i almost forgot about sesame street...

Bert 06-18-2002 06:02 AM

Well, I'm confused but curious about why someone would

a) want to masquerade as another gender on the Internet and

b) Make a conspicuous assertion of their gender in their title by choosing a female name when everyone else here chooses gender neutral aliases.

Bert

PS. my real name is Paul (not Bert)

OK, that is easy enough to answer.

My original name here was shadowhacker, but to many people kept thinking I was a boy, and it got annoying. To add on top of it, many would be totally surprised that a girl is a Linux forum when they found out. So I decided that a more female name would help reduce that problem.

I had a few other possible names, but they were decidedly female. I was going to use my email alias, but by the time I actually thought about it, I already created a new LQ account.

Hope that answers your question.

As to your comment about why someone would want to act like another gender on the web... I suppose to play. I have a couple of friends that do that, but I dont. I dont really understand why.. just be yourself.
