I'm retired also. But I play with motorcycles instead of trains when off the computer.
I kind of have a limit on my physical strength...
What sort of cicles do you have?
I have an old Suzuki GS1000G sitting, corroding, and gettin old, sitting in the shed waiting for me to restore back to old glory,,
Plus an old engine Ronaldson Brothers and Tippet from 1928, 6.5 hp at 600 rpm...
And to run off it, a pre 1927 seed cleaner(the name escapes me at the moment) the company that made them was bought out by Simplex in 1927 and they stopped making them..
Another couple of things to restore are, sulky x 2, horse drawn mulboard ploughs, one timber(Made by a company in Indiana) another steel made by Sunshine in Victoria. and the steel work for a horse drawn buggy.
Physical ability will mean it could take years for me to rebuild them, but my customized 4wd is going to be shop built, I dont have the strength to do that now...
So the model trains get the most attention. My son has taken over all the farm work, he's 18 now and well on his way to be the boss..
I can't believe people still think about Windows vs Linux...
A bit like comparing a Model T with a Maclaren...
As for Win95, I still remember watching TV and seeing poor Mr Gates on TV... Must have been so embarassing after spending all that money on advertising and sending the TV signal to all these other countries(like here in Australia) and then having to ask someone to fix Windows 95...
I wasted a perfectly good evening watching him...
Could have been getting drunk instead, would have had the same laugh too...
OS/2 was quite good..
Did use some ms-dos up to about 3.11 maybe ms-dos 4.0.. I remember turbo menu on one system...
Mostly remember the old system 80 tho... so my memory is not too good...
I think I first had a computer of sorts about 1976-77..
I do remember saying to a friend, it would be nice to be able to carry my computer to his place and back again, in a bag... He reconned it would be good to carry one in your pocket...
We did believe that would never happen for another 100 years...
I think that was 40 years ago, he's dead and I'm confused about how to make a phone call without using the laptop...
I believe that was Windows 98 that crashed, 95 was a bit more stable than 98.

I think the trend we've spotted is that the versions meant for businesses to use, and which were a little more complex to set up, eneded up being easier to use in the long run.
Later on I actually found using Windows on an AD domain easier than trying to use it stand-alone also.
XP home and pro were the same core, XP was the first to unite the core of the 9x and NT lines. The biggest issues were the IE integration, the removal of the reg key to control the swappiness, etc.
I've been under the rock lately to the news of windows vista being discontinued in April. If that is the case. I will use linux full time as to getting windows 10. I've seen those videos on youtube on disabling those spying features but there are mixed reviews that they work or not.
It is only the updates that are being discontinued.
Like any old car, manufacturer support ceases after a few years and after a couple of later models have been produced.
It will still work and I suspect most third party people that supported it will continue to do so. Quite frankly it was never particularly liked even by Windows supporters.

windows 98SE and XP were my favorite versions of windows.
Microsoft has a hard on for everybody using older versions of windows to go windows 10. I wonder how soon windows 7 and 8 will follow XP's and vista's paradigm? DUN DUN DUUUUN!!!

They are a commercial company and like the rest, they want to push their latest product and reduce their costs in supporting old products. They certainly overstepped the line with their efforts with 10 and have actually admitted that it was a big mistake to do so.
As I hinted, a lot of Windows affectionados have got the hump and jumped ship.
The only reasons I haven't joined them is because I make a living out of support. I certainlt do NOT use 10 unless it is to find out how it does things.

Mozilla has said that not only will the next version of Firefox, 53, not run on CPUs older than the Intel P4 or AMD Opteron, it will not run on win-XP or vista. Being the cynic I am, I wonder how much mickeysoft paid mozilla to do that?
BTW, if your older CPU supports SSE2, then it can, supposedly, run Firefox-53.
