well all the people are here but no pictures ever allowed. as david gelernter(computer scientist, mirror world ) said 'it is strange for a man of science not to also be fascinated by the arts' or something like that. so i must find a place that allows image tags at least if not avatars. LLO is such a place however the user count is low so if any of you ever feel like stopping by....
Like avatars, image tags slow the site down and make it tacky. We try to maintain this site to keep it clean and professional. One reason image tags are not allowed as it gets fairly ugly with broken links as well.

Try if for a while, you will like it. It was strange at first, but look how fast the loads are, and you concentrate on the names, not the images (that kill dial up anyway).

Does this include links in the sig lines?
If you'd prefer not to have that, I'll remove it from mine.
i'd point out that the fast loading times and such like are down to the superb work that Jeremy puts into this site, in order to make it one (if not the) best site for getting help on linux issues. WIth a number of leading distributions using this site as their recommended and/or OFFICIAL help site - slackware, LFS, connectiva and others in the pipeline. It is because of the way this site has grown and progressed that ASL were kind enough to donate a new server a few months back. It's a general formula that's working extremely well for all who have been involved over LinuxQuestion's life.
i guess i go without images, what choice have i? and even though i might click a sponsor link once in awhile i wont be a contributer im afraid. not trying to be ugly about it, just not a true believer in this site. thats all i have to say about this subject
Is there a way to remove the ads? They are really killing the DSL connection which pumps 1.4mbs. J/k. I like it w/ out all the images too. The banners...well I think Mozilla can block them.
So tell me...do you guys get paid by the click w/ your banners? If so, we should round up a big group and have them click the ads...at least once.
you can remove ads, enable private messaing etc... when you become a contributing member
naturally the site gets funds from banner advertising, but not a huge amount. dontaing money to causes from which you benefit is always a good idea. http://www.linuxquestions.org/member/
The user options do offer the following options (which I used to use when on modem):
Quote:
Show user's signatures in their posts? yes no
Show user's avatar in their posts? yes no
Show image attachments and [img] code in Posts?
I find Avatars and/or sigs can help find posts, etc.. a lot easier than looking for names.
But...
Most of the time, the avatars & graphic sigs aren't really that great anyway and a lot of people do go overboard. Some people do like to take the time to make their own quality pics that actually look quite decent, I even drew up & edited my own avatar for boards that use them. Some people like to "test" the limits of whats allowed, or just use really poor pics. Another common problem is offsite linking to someone else's pics, stealing their bandwidth.
The only time I've seen avatars & g-sigs work well, and actually look good is when they're heavily watched for size & content, which equals even more work for mods/admins . Another option is the preset avatars that you can select from.
When it comes down to an easy solution to keep the "professional" look, I would agree with the mods/admin in having both disabled would be the best option.
