Grub setup problem (/boot/grub/stage1 not found)

My partition layout is as follows:

hdb1 - hdb9 contains linux of other distributions.

/dev/hdb10 /boot
/dev/hdb11 /

I install Grub via
Code:
apt-get install grub
However, I notice stage1, stage2, *stage1_5 files are not in /boot/grub. In fact, the grub directory is not even there. So I created /boot/grub and copy the files stage1, stage2 and various *stage1_5 into /boot/grub. Afterwhich, as root, I run
Code:
grub
which bring me to the grub prompt (grub>).
Code:
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
returns the Errror that it cannot be found. However, I can locate stage1 in /boot/grub/ by 'ls' and 'locate'.

Any advice, please?

Thanks !

david:/boot# grub-install --root-directory=/boot /dev/hdb
Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time.
Installation finished. No error reported.
This is the contents of the device map /boot/boot/grub/device.map.
Check if this is correct or not. If any of the lines is incorrect,
fix it and re-run the script `grub-install'.

(fd0) /dev/fd0
(hd0) /dev/hda
(hd1) /dev/hdb

Also, I have /boot/boot/grub directory after running grub-install --root-directory=/boot /dev/hdb. Is that correct?

How do I put GRUB into the boot sector of a partition instead of putting it in the MBR via grub-install? I'm using W2kpro to allow me to choose the OS I want to load.

Thanks !
