alsaconf not finding sound card

I have just installed Debian linux and am having a problem with the sound. When I try alsaconf, i get the following message:

debian:/etc/apt# alsaconf
modinfo: snd: no module by that name found
modinfo: snd: no module by that name found
modinfo: snd: no module by that name found
Unloading ALSA sound driver modules: (none loaded).
Building card database...

and a message that says:

No supported PnP or PCI card found.
Would you like to probe legacy ISA sound cards/chips?

I answer NO to this on the basis that the rest of the message says that YES may make the system unstable.

The "lspci | grep audio" command returns:

0000:00:0d.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy LS

so something recognises that a sound card is present.

I do not know where to go from here.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Steve.

Hi Steve!

I am not too familiar with Debian, never took the plunge completely really. I'll move this post on over to the Debian forum to give it the exposure it deserves. In the meantime, a bit of background:

It appears that the message is letting you know that the alsa 'soundcore' module is not loaded or able to load. This most likely is the result of the kernel not having it listed as a module (whether it's because you have it as a 'y' or maybe a 'n') that can be loaded. So, hopefully, since you decided to install Debian, you are familiar enough to compile a kernel If not, I'm sure one of the Deb guru's will help you with furthering this.

The other thing is that lspci is a great tool. However, it will blindly list what you've got, not necessarily listing what your kernel will/does support. So, it's great for seeing what you've got, but not so great for seeing what you can actually use currently.

Good Luck!

Cool
