'make' error compiling alsa driver

Sarge ... kernel 2.6.8-2

Got an update for my audio driver from alsa. Worked thru some problems with the ./configure script. Now the 'make'

It ran along pretty good for a while, then stopped with these statements:

make[3]: *** [/home/user/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.4/kbuild/../acore/hwdep.o] Error 1
make[2]: *** [/home/user/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.4/kbuild/../acore] Error 2
make[1]: *** [_module_/home/user/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.4/kbuild] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernel-headers-2.6.8-2-386'
make: *** [compile] Error 2

Looks like there should be a place for me to see exactly what caused 'make[3] ... Error 1,' etc., but I don't have a clue where that would be. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I fail to see what you are trying to do here, why not use the ALSA drivers already included in the 2.6.8 kernel you are running??

Because the vendor released a new driver 3 mos. ago ... for both Linux and Windows.

Alsa has the new driver, but I assume it's not the one in 2.6.8.

The current driver is pretty good, but to my ear, there is room for improvement. The new driver improved the heck out of Windows, and I assume it will do the same thing here.

Well you are trying to compile 1.0.4 and I am fairly sure that a 2.6.8 kernel has at least newer than that for alsa in it. You may want to go to the www.kernel.org and check the change logs for it and see what version is there for sure. If necessary you can always install a newer version of the kernel from the archives like a 2.6.10 or .11 the driver should be in one of them.
