Update for those looking to learn Linux - to a nit-picky degree...

I re-found Red Hat 9 - "Shrike" the other day. The Red Hat site had some seriously detailed manuals that go with that. Clear, large, good.
Red Hat 9, I would call, the first of the modern Linux distributions. I know that Debian was in good shape about that time... but... overall the market-share wasn't so hot for Deb at that time.
Now, I am an ubuntu fanatic...!
But, if you feel like ubuntu is masking too much of the nuts and bolts, yet, still want to have references to help you figure out those nuts and bolts:
then I recommend loading Red Hat 9 - shrike on your server box. Setup a BIND server. Some DHCP. And a LAMP setup (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP - aka a web-server) that you can dabble with.
There has been a lot of big automated routines added in the years since RH9 that obfuscate what's going on... yet, pre RH9 things just didnt work very easily...
RH9 is that sweet spot.

Yes,i agree with you! i someone want to know deeply about linux inside. should not use automake linux edition. although it is time-consuming to do that.

Yeah, Bitzsk...
work, no work...
I think I want to do "Linux From Scratch" using Ubuntu for the build...
Also, consider Gentoo if you are also considering suicide. :-)Posted 12-10-2009 at 11:31 AM by kcoriginal
