Pty's -- Hitting Limit!

I have an RS/6000 machine running AIX 4.3.3 (ML: 11) and it only allow a total of 16 users (plus the console) login to be on the machine at any one time. I have investigated a bit and found a smitty screen that can: "Change / Show Characteristics of the PTY"

Now, listed on this smitty screen are two interesting things:

Maximum number of Pseudo-Terminals [256]

and

Maximum number of BSD Pseudo-Terminals [16]

So is the upper limit 256? and the currently configured state 16? I don't have a need to go above about 30, but I am just curious about this.

Also, do I have to reboot the machine after increasing the value of 16 to say 30?

Thanks AIX'ers...

The two things are completely separate. AIX supports both the AT&T and BSD standards for pseudo-terminals, with AT&T being the default.

You can change each number independently. Changes take effect immediately, without a reboot or even a need to log off and on again.

Have a read of the pty files page http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/aix/files/aixfiles/pty.htm which seems to cover most of the details.
