I'm with acampbell, I use spectrwm. Light, small, easy config, restart in-place, tiling and floating windows. Spectrwm plus tmux satisfies all my needs, including the half-a-dozen remote sessions I have going at any one time.
I voted for DWM, but I am starting to use spectrwm a lot more since volume keys on my laptop and three different keyboards now seem to work whenever they feel like it. All of the volume keys work with just about every other window manager I've tried, so DWM is most likely the cause of my problem. I just wish there was a patch for spectrwm to implement a system tray.
Whether I'm running in a console, or in KDE or Xfce, I typically dedicate one desktop in my pager to Twin and have severa twterms running where I ssh into remote boxes where I have Tmux sessions running.
Twin plays nice whether it is running in your desktop manager or all by itself in the console. Think of it kinda like a hypervisor for Tmux or screen, if you will
respect to i3 for it's elegance, ease, effectiveness, development speed and trajectory, and opening a whole new world of tiling window management to those who feared tiling, thinking it was all ratpoison.
and of course, much respect to xmonad, the king of window managers, imo. i've since gone back to it, and addapted it to make use of some of the features i found in clfswm and i3. it's that awesome.
... but still, i want to vote for clfswm, give it what little reccognition i can.
and i know a few people who will want to vote for herbsluftwm too. (yet to try it myself, but it's all the rage in some circles)
