midnight commander!
your bacon saver!
The best tux app ever

stingo 02-03-2006 03:17 AM

krusader hit this year

segin 02-04-2006 09:08 AM

midnight commander!

teckk 02-05-2006 12:13 PM

I use Rox mostly.
I always install the KDE libs so I can have Konqueror. For a quick access to a shared resource Konqueror will have it done before you can get it mounted normally.

landroni 02-06-2006 11:45 AM

Firstly try emelFM and then emelFM2. You will not regret it. EmelFM2 is currently the best on the market. [Well, of course MC is unbeatable on certain points, but it is old and specific].

vikramna 02-07-2006 07:54 AM

All are good but this one is my favourite. Nautilus that is

Thetargos 02-07-2006 11:27 AM

I voted Nautilus. With the advent of VFS and the ability to mount remote shares (be them SMB, FTP, SSH, HTTP) and have them persistent across reboots/session logins is incredible!

archtoad6 02-07-2006 01:15 PM

Konqueror is great, but MC is crucial.

Konqueror is great, I use it every day; but for me MC is crucial to administer any GNU/Linux box. Installing MC is roughly the 3rd item on my std. check list to make a new install usable.

Description
For those of you not (yet) familiar w/ MC: (from KPackage)
Quote:

midnight commander - a powerful file manager
GNU Midnight Commander is a text-mode full-screen file manager. It uses a two panel interface and a subshell for command execution. It includes an internal editor with syntax highlighting and an internal viewer with support for binary files. Also included is Virtual Filesystem (VFS), that allows files on remote systems (e.g. FTP, SSH, SMB servers) and files inside archives to be manipulated like real files.
Why MC:
  • works w/ or w/o GUI
  • "highlight & activate" navigation
    -- w/ keyboard or mouse
  • 2 panels
  • easy CLI access
  • "fish"-ing
-- i.e. connect either or both panels to a remote machine
  • mcedit included

Text mode, i.e. no GUI necessary, is the deal-breaker -- I love the ease of reading of my GUI, & I usually fire up MC in a Konsole, rather than a tty/vc; but there are times when X is inconvenient or unavailable, & then I must know I can fall back on MC in its original state. I think that there is a very good reason why the Konsole "Session" menu includes MC & root MC.

I wish that all distros, especially the ones aimed at new users, automatically included MC. For me it is a near crime that Linspire (ugh) & SimplyMEPIS (my favorite) do not include it. My Q for them is: Who do you think is going to help your converts when they need it, and what do you think those helpers' favorite emergency tools are? </ rant>

perikles 02-07-2006 04:02 PM

Rox got my vote (due to size/features ratio) although I prefer Nautilus.

KimVette 02-07-2006 05:36 PM

Kudos to the mods for removing the spamvertisement! :)

Flame deleted. If you didn't see it, well, maybe I'll post a similar one directed at another spammer sometime.

Present 02-07-2006 09:10 PM

i challenge anyone to use MC for 1 hour, then compare it to any other app "out of the box." MC is so lean with just the right settings from the start for fast file management. it's great.

danex50 02-16-2006 02:46 AM

I like Krusader. I'm used to the two panel interface style. And of course, as a second choice, always Midnight Commander.

d0g 02-16-2006 04:19 AM

Voted for Nautilus. Evidence was a really nice file manager based on E17, sad that it's developement has stopped =(

But the best file manager was, is and will be /bin/bash =P

CLOUD_2000 02-16-2006 07:08 AM

Konqueror

Konqueror is the best! :)

Zsub 02-16-2006 08:24 AM

I worked hard to get the money to buy myself an iPod.
No doubt others worked hard to get it supported in Konqueror.
They did a great job!

rholt 02-16-2006 08:35 AM

Krusader is a twin-panel file manager.
Handles all the Kio slaves, virtual file systems, ftp, and more, in the manner of the DOS Norton Commander, but on steroids.

I use Kanotix because it installs Krusader out of the box. New version 1.70 is available from the site; will soon be in the Debian repository.

Edit note: See I need to update my profile. Changed from Mandrake over a year ago.

joe f. 02-16-2006 11:23 AM

Rox. It's always the first menu addition I make for Fluxbox, and the first icon I add or change to Gnome/KDE.

agustingp7 02-16-2006 01:18 PM

File Manager of the Year

Although krusader is a serious thing, I'm a konqueror man.

cincindie 02-16-2006 02:49 PM

Will probably be a close race again this year by the looks of it.

BodyDrop 02-17-2006 04:28 PM

i use rox coz its fast and does what i need. I'm planning on switching tho'...

bluexp 02-18-2006 02:16 AM

Konqueror!

I choose Konqueror!

DrEwMoNeY 02-18-2006 02:24 AM

Konqueror

I use Konqueror, not that I pick it over any others, I just use it because it is there. Not much file management going on here!

Jessii 02-18-2006 03:27 AM

Nautilus with tree view for the nice looks
Tux Commander for light twin mode

phil.d.g 02-18-2006 05:05 AM

I'm surprised at the number of people voting for mc.

If I'm in the cli I find it so much more easier to use the simple file manipulation commands: cp, mv, rm and so on rather than fire up mc.

I hardly use my chosen file manager, only when I'm in X and "can't really be bothered" mode, but IMHO its such an excellent bit of kit I couldn't not vote for it.

archtoad6 02-18-2006 09:14 AM

Interesting difference between us: I can't stand all the typing, even using tab completion, compared to the near "point & click" that mc gives.

It's a matter of taste.

Krusader is the best!

jblq 02-19-2006 12:28 AM

Konqueror for heavy duty; Rox for light duty.

darthtux 02-19-2006 05:23 AM

I voted for mc because I like the command line interface. Especially when I do a lot of work remotely. But I also like gentoo and konqueror.

kozaki 02-19-2006 02:22 PM

You forgot to include Thunar

jhigz 02-19-2006 09:45 PM

I really like gentoo.

archtoad6 02-20-2006 02:12 PM

Since when is Gentoo a file manager?

Are you sure you're in the right thread?

WHAT?!?!?! Are you kidding?!?! Gentoo (the file manager) is quite famous!! Besides the all-time-famous Gentoo distribution.

Linkety-link-link: http://www.obsession.se/gentoo/

archtoad6 02-20-2006 04:39 PM

That link seems broken:

Quote:

Hello. This used to be the gentoo home page, but because of an unfortunate combination of a web hotel switch and a hard disk crash, the site is gone. :/

Thetargos 02-20-2006 05:00 PM

You can still get the software ;)

jhigz 02-20-2006 10:44 PM

Try this link.
http://freshmeat.net/projects/gentoo/

The deb package at Freshmeat is version "0.11.55". If you would prefer loading directly from the Debian repo's, version "0.11.46" exist in sarge, etch and sid.

Once I tried gentoo as my file manager I never looked for another.

You can, with Krusader. ;) (Hint: uses the same KIO Slaves. Of course you must love twin panel file managers.)

berkes 02-24-2006 02:25 AM

Kde :d

KDE has it baked into its very foundation. Its sooo 90-ies to talk about file managers.
Well, okay, konqueror.

Haines Browsn 02-24-2006 06:36 AM

Just thought I'd toss in FR (fileRunner). I once configured emacs to work like MC, but still FR seems easiest for quick processing of files.

That's why I don't like KDE. It's sooo windoze-like =P

alaskazimm 02-24-2006 10:21 AM

Konqueror on this machine. Rarely use anything else.

brockers 02-28-2006 09:28 AM

There is really no way anyone can justifiably pick Nautilus over Konqueror. It lacks 90% of its functionality, its slower, its less flexable, and its difficult to extend (although the Python interface has helped.) You can even make Konqueror look like Nautilus if you want. I can understand people perfering the file manager that integrates with their environment but any other argument really comes up lacking.

Bobby

Thetargos 02-28-2006 09:41 AM

There are lots of things I have not been able to do with Konqueror that I can with Nautilus (like persistent network mounts over protocols such as ssh, ftp, http, smb, etc)

craigevil 02-28-2006 02:48 PM

In KDE Konqueror.

On my laptop running IceWM Rox-filer flies.

Satissh Srinivasan 02-28-2006 05:50 PM

Gentoo file manager is very good. But i do most of my work in the console. Who needs these?

coltree 03-01-2006 04:46 AM

definitely Rox, on top of jwm, small, fast and rich

baldy1324 03-02-2006 08:51 PM

Nautilus

im not a newbie and just use nautilus b/c i dont know anything else. with other scripts nautilus is definently my fav.

coltree 03-03-2006 07:04 AM

I'm a newbie who's been using Linux for 10 years. Who gives us that label.
Do we have to post something cool on this site to become a "leet hacker"
moderator, please moderate the labels, or change mine to "old school"

archtoad6 03-03-2006 08:04 AM

"Newbie" == "LQ Newbie"

You probably know that "Newbie" refers to your status w/in LQ, not Linux use.

Nevertheless, you have a valid complaint, one that could be fixed by changing the descriptor to "LQ Newbie". Why don't you make that suggestion in the appropriate forum? Tell 'em I sent you ;).
