Mplayer compiling error FreeBSD 4.10

I've removed mplayer to be able to install newest build. But I've run into a few problems...

I've only recently started using BSD....

Here's probably the most relevant information... please ask for more details if you need it.

AFAIK mplayer has very bad written code,
and is very hard to get compiled.
You nedd axactly the right gcc and libtool versions.

Waiting for the binary package is way easier.

Are you using the mplayer port? If so what version of the port is it?

I've tried installing from ports collection, MPlayer 1.0pre4. I've also downloaded and tried MPlayer 1.0pre5.

tiger# gcc -v
Using builtin specs.
gcc version 2.95.4 20020320 [FreeBSD]

Libtool13 maybe ??

Just curious but when was the last time you synched your ports tree to cvs and portupgrade all the stale ports? My money is on never If that is the case you need to seriously look into cvsup and portupgrade.

Read this: http://openbsdforums.org/forums/show...threadid=10467

PS: Mplayer compiles and works fine on an up to date system so... It's really not a question of "crappy" code.

To throw my $.02 in, I recently installed mplayer on 5.2.x. No problems. The ports system did its thing and also included the win32 codecs.

Thanks for your advice. And sorry Stack, hope not _all_ your money is on "never". It's rather about two months ago, maybe. But still, I guess that's more than enough, as Dexter (your cvsup link) recommends updating every week. BTW nice scripts, saves a lot of time! I've seriously looked into portupgrade, installing and deinstalling xvid (guessing that this is related to opendivx) and other single ports.

My "story"
Some (many) earlier compilation error-messages has been solved by linking some files to other filenames, I understand this is a common way, but it sounds scary. (something.so.4 to something.so.5 or whatever). Also, I've updated FreeBSD from 4.9 to 4.10, it was scary to do as a BSD-newbie, and I feel I didn't quite know what I was doing.

But I guess a full maintenance might do the trick. Why didn't I try that before? Downside is that it takes a lot of time, but at least I can write a progress report here then.... ;-)

OK, I came this far, any clues??
