I made the first line in /etc/rc.d/rc.serial read:
#!/bin/sh
and on the first attempt it connected the way it should, and also downloaded all the mail including a test from that account.
My fingers are crossed.

No howto?
There is something maybe useful on the manufacturer's website (3com?) which you can download, but then you should change ttyS3 to ttyS4. I don't bother anymore, and it still works.
