Well, I'm the author of xfce4-timer-plugin , and I can tell you that it doesn't rely on X-stuff for time keeping. It uses Glib's timeout functions which should not in any way be affected from a switch to console.

As I said, KTimer works here, I just made it play a .wav file by direct command, then from a script. I believe the issue lies somewhere else. This is the most confusing bit for me:

-- this shows that KTimer started programs can play sounds, on my system.

Tried with "play /home/myuser/sound/chime.wav", and again got silence.
Have not figured out what it is rejecting.
Why would "play" work with one file and not with another? Can you try copying the chime.wav file to the same directory as the first file and try with that one (I'm trying to eliminate permission-related issues).

I did install ktimer with snap. As I do not know how to configure ktime right with snap, I deinstalled it and reinstalled it with apt-get. Now it works fine.
