Unity Main Menu - where is it?

My wife is using Natty with the Unity desktop. I'm getting used to it (under protest) since I'm her help desk.

In Applications, there is an icon for Main Menu. I've added an entry under System, but how does one display the menu to select the entry?

If I click on the Applications icon in the launcher, and select System, I see installed programs, not the items in Main Menu that are ticked for display, and my new entry is not there.

Where is the menu???

TIA
Jim

Unity is intended for the illiterate market. There is no menu. You have to be able to read to use one. The Canonical folks have decided you don't have that "guru" skill and even if you do you should not want to flaunt in front of others.

Then why do they torment me by providing a way to maintain it???

As far as I know, untiy doesnt have a 'main menu'. No idea why there is an icon for 'main menu' in the applications launcher.

There is this-

What is ClassicMenu Indicator?

ClassicMenu Indicator is a notification area applet (application indicator) for the top panel of Ubuntu’s Unity desktop environment. It provides a simple way to get a classic GNOME-style application menu for those who prefer this over the Unity dash menu. Like the classic GNOME menu, it includes Wine games and applications if you have those installed.

But might not be the best idea to install it-

Status

ClassicMenu Indicator is beta software. It works for me and a lot of other users but may still have some bugs. Use it at your own risk.

If you find a bug in ClassicMenu Indicator please report it at the bugtracker at Launchapd so that I can fix it. Thank you.

You have my smypathy. You've also got a suggestion- Xfce4. Its closer to the old gnome2.X than unity is, easier for you to use as tech support. :D

LMAO.

Considering how many unity fans say 'I dont mind no menu, I just hit the 'super' key then type the 1st few letters for the program I want to launch' its obviously not for illiterates. :D

How much it is for people who just take what they are given, thats more debatable. ;)

The idea is that Unity will be good for new users. Attract new users. Keep new users.

I am sure that new users have no ability to type the first, or first few, letters of the application they are looking for. That is what the menu is for. The rest of the new users can click on pretty pictures until they find something that may suit their needs.

What a crock of crap.

It is meant for the illiterate with no need for anything but porn and You Tube videos.

You're normally a bit less tense than this widget.

I still think that 'illiterate' isnt right, but I'll agree on everything else. :D
