My wife is using Natty with the Unity desktop. I'm getting used to it (under protest) since I'm her help desk.
In Applications, there is an icon for Main Menu. I've added an entry under System, but how does one display the menu to select the entry?
If I click on the Applications icon in the launcher, and select System, I see installed programs, not the items in Main Menu that are ticked for display, and my new entry is not there.

Unity is intended for the illiterate market. There is no menu. You have to be able to read to use one. The Canonical folks have decided you don't have that "guru" skill and even if you do you should not want to flaunt in front of others.
As far as I know, untiy doesnt have a 'main menu'. No idea why there is an icon for 'main menu' in the applications launcher.

You have my smypathy. You've also got a suggestion- Xfce4. Its closer to the old gnome2.X than unity is, easier for you to use as tech support.

Considering how many unity fans say 'I dont mind no menu, I just hit the 'super' key then type the 1st few letters for the program I want to launch' its obviously not for illiterates.
How much it is for people who just take what they are given, thats more debatable.

I am sure that new users have no ability to type the first, or first few, letters of the application they are looking for. That is what the menu is for. The rest of the new users can click on pretty pictures until they find something that may suit their needs.
What a crock of crap.

You're normally a bit less tense than this widget.
I still think that 'illiterate' isnt right, but I'll agree on everything else.
