Need help guys, I made a bootable USB drive and got Ubuntu version 16.4... just because I have and old HP zv6100 with only 512MB RAM!I had to upgrade the OS from Windows XP pro to Win7 via bootable ISO USB drive, I had that drive but it got lost..I think it got stolen, anyways I need massive help to get this program working!! any criticism, insights, work arounds, replacements, etc. etc, thanks guys and I'm glad to be here!
Oh and BTW, I'm stuck because I can't seem to boot Windows now, I'm great at these kinda things but I'm truly stumped.

michaelk 06-25-2022 01:31 PM

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.

Does the USB drive boot ok?
Did you actually install Ubuntu and when the system rebooted you saw the tainted message?

The "can't boot Windows now" might be either caused by the installer overwriting the Windows boot loader which failed to complete successfully or you selected to overwrite Windows which means it no longer exists or both.

AK0529 06-25-2022 02:05 PM

Hey bud thanks for getting back to me, on the question about does the drive boot? Not to Ubuntu OS, I can get the recovery to boot with no avail, I've tried to find windows OS but can't find it, I've been trying to at least try to put another version of Ubuntu that's on the USB drive but I can't get back to the initial options, I had to download 16.4.xxx, all I know is I need help majorly,I'm really great at these "basic" program's, I'm not worried if I lost Windows OS, it's just a play machine anyway but I want to fix it for my brother, he wants it for some reason because he can hardly use his smartphone! But any help would be greatly appreciated.

michaelk 06-25-2022 02:32 PM

Instead of Ubuntu I would try antiX. It is a lightweight and current distribution.

https://antixlinux.com/

To write the ISO file to a USB drive the Windows utility of choice is Rufus.

https://rufus.ie/en/

You can read the manual here:
https://mxlinux.org/manuals/

Since you do not care about recovering Windows just use the entire disk for installation.

AK0529 06-25-2022 02:36 PM

So am I supposed to burn this iso to use my phone? Because I can't get my CPU to boot up, it's in a soft brick.

AK0529 06-25-2022 02:40 PM

Also this the program I used http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

michaelk 06-25-2022 03:36 PM

I did not know that you did not have another PC. You can try to reinstalling from scratch or just the boot loader from the live USB.

https://www.fosslinux.com/4477/how-t...-usb-drive.htm

AK0529 06-25-2022 03:55 PM

Man I can't mount my drive to run commands, I did get it to mount to my OnePlus 9 via a usb A to usb C dongle and all it told me was that my drive is damaged...?? I have attached a pic of the GRUB and some commands I entered and thought it was going to work.

I've managed to get the jpg to upload after some nifty cropping and such, can you understand the pic? Because code is my one downfall. Ugh

michaelk 06-25-2022 04:33 PM

grub is the linux boot loader and your currently running its rescue mode which has a very limited number of commands.
The correct grub command for finding /boot is
ls (hd0,msdos1)
msdos1 could be your swap partition. Try
ls (hd0,mdos2)

https://phoenixnap.com/kb/grub-rescue

Can you boot the USB flash drive to a running live Ubuntu?

AK0529 06-25-2022 04:39 PM

I had all the installers put the program on the computer but when it finished the install it would never boot up..?? Idk what, why, and how it will not boot, I have a old HP zv6100 computer, is there anything besides F10, F12, ESC. or any of the other button commands I can do? I've used SHIFT+1 etc etc

michaelk 06-25-2022 05:13 PM

Since your in grub rescue mode you obviously booted the USB drive successfully and installed something to the hard drive so I am not sure why you seem to be having problems with booting the USB drive now. I assume that you downloaded the live desktop version versus the installer.

I do not know what happened either but what makes this difficult is that the only real troubleshooting tool you have is the USB drive.

I am unfamiliar with the HP but usually the BIOS can be typically accessed by either the del, esc, F2, F10, F12 keys. Sometimes the BIOS boot screen will display the desired key. I assume the BIOS was configured to boot from USB first.

AK0529 06-25-2022 05:20 PM

See thing is Mike is it when in bias mode it does show the Linux code for you know the the bias and whenever I try and put the the USB disc in front of the hard drive it boots but it goes to a screen where it's black and it has the blinking dash up on the top left of the thing unless I put it in recovery mode itself so I really don't know what the hex going on with it obviously you know I've put the software on the internal hard drive it's that you know obviously the USB is the boot disc so I'm I'm really stomping I usually am pretty good at all this I'm going to go and read what you sent me just the last message and see what's up with that so I mean I appreciate the help and if you can think of anything else just you know shoot me a message again but I appreciate all your help my friend I'm going to see if I can get this right if not it's okay though I got my other computer's coming tomorrow maybe I'll fix tomorrow when I get my computer and maybe it was a godson that you and I had interacted today thanks man.
Sorry for the double words I was dictating and that usually always mess with some words, lol

Here is what I'm getting now from the ESC boot, how can there be no such device?? I'm stumped and bad thing is I can't enter the command prompt to try and sort this beast out!😈

michaelk 06-25-2022 05:42 PM

It should be much easier with another computer. Download antiX and try from scratch.

AK0529 06-25-2022 06:03 PM

:thumbsup:yep now I got an even bigger project and just think it all because of my undoing! I do appreciate a the links to, when I get this sorted you'll be the first to know! And considering you are the only one to try and help me, lol, have a good one Mike, stay safe and keep on keeping on, let you know soon my friend, thanks again, AK

AK0529 06-25-2022 06:48 PM

Hey Mike I think I may have gotten somewhere, I was able to open the command prompt with the letter C. I'm trying to follow the guidelines you set forth but I'm still new to this, I don't get this because I'm great at rooting and unlocking bootloader's on Android devices but this code on Ubuntu is confusing me because so of it is right along with the Linux code our phones have, I have hit TAB to get possible commands, this gonna take some time I feel, but hey, this is a hobby of mine minus storm chasing!

Here's a pic of where I'm at currently, any insight??

michaelk 06-25-2022 09:35 PM

grub is the boot loader which basically is a small program that starts the process of loading the operating system. Shell commands like sudo and fdisk do not work within grub.

Did you find the partition with the /boot directory as shown in the link I posted?

AK0529 06-25-2022 09:53 PM

I found a lot man, examples are (hd0), (hd0,1), (prco), (hd0,msdos2), (hd0,msdos1), (hd1), (hd1,msdos5), (hd1.msdos1) is all of the individual ones I have to do like the SET PREFIX=(HD1)/GRUB
SET ROOT=(HD1)
INSMOD LINUX
shits blowing my mind because I went through all those in exactly the same fashion with no avail can you help a little bit more maybe

AK0529 06-25-2022 09:57 PM

Here's the rest of my inputs...
INSMOD NORMAL
NORMAL
I'm not getting to "NORMAL" because it says can't find command etc, I'll snap a pic and crop it to 256mb

AK0529 06-25-2022 10:08 PM

Can I just text you the pictures, trying to crop down to 256mb is proving to be a high task, my number, we 2 cool cats out business is our business, it's like Las Vegas in here want happens in Vegas stays in Vagas.

michaelk 06-25-2022 10:12 PM

Since you are getting your computer tomorrow it would be much easier to just wait. Load antiX on the USB drive and start fresh.

We really do not know the condition of the data or partitions on the drive at the moment and we can't boot from the USB drive either.

The purpose of linuxquestions.org is to share knowledge. No texting. Please remove your phone number. It is possible that nefarious people will start spamming you.

AK0529 06-25-2022 10:15 PM

Well even said if true, I'm going to be at this all night now, it's got me mad, frustrated, happy because I'm learning even more and how to implement correct procedure and what's in place of what each other is so that's pretty cool I don't want to stay up all night but I think it's going to happen because I started something I want to finish it even though my computer is going to be here tomorrow I'm being a little anal retentive on it got to get it got to get it right good thing about instant gratification it's not instant LOL buddy

AK0529 06-25-2022 10:44 PM

P#disloved my friend, thanks you been a Hugh help, hope I can call upon you with more noob problems I may need help with.

michaelk 06-26-2022 09:21 AM

We will be happy to help when you get your computer. In the mean time you might want to learn about grub and how it works.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_GRUB
https://www.tutorialspoint.com/what-is-grub-in-linux
https://www.linuxfoundation.org/blog...ub-2-on-linux/

I believe the reason you can't boot is that grub can not find /boot which is why you see the "grub rescue >" command line prompt. normal is a module i.e normal.mod which is normally located in the /boot/grub. This could be that grub did not install correctly or that something failed with installing Ubuntu. Without being able to boot from USB we can not confirm either way.

The reason I suggested using antiX instead of Ubuntu 16 is that the latter is unsupported, you will not be able to easily install other programs and there are security vulnerabilities with out of date software. antiX IMHO is a good choice for older PCs with limited RAM.

Was able boot into tty1, I remembered my username, I read that even though you can't see the password and just type it in, hence *where I'm at now* still boggled on what to do next? It looks like I'm good to go except correct code implementation, I can use SUDO now, so please advise if you don't mind.

michaelk 06-26-2022 11:05 AM

I guess persistence pays off...

You should be able to use ctrl-c to get out of that mess. Try the following command.

Quote:

sudo grub-install /dev/sda

AK0529 06-26-2022 11:25 AM

I will try that just as soon as i can, my brain is on semi-overload, lol, I was kinda hoping not to have to use my new computer for this, that's why I am doing what I am on the old HP, gotta admit 17 years for a laptop with zero upgrades is not to bad huh? Only thing I did was convert the Windows XP to Win7 and just that not to long ago, say 3 weeks ago. but yes I'm going to read the other links you sent plus maybe call upon you again for any problems that may arise??

AK0529 06-26-2022 11:55 AM

Man it looked all good when I ran that command and It so called "fixed" it but basically I got a bootloop right back to where I started, does that sound like something else is wrong to or what? I'm at a loss of words, it took me over 12 hours on time sorting this out and from the help from you, but basically all I have done is remember my username and password!?? Darn I thought I could have done this without the help from my new computer.

michaelk 06-26-2022 12:03 PM

I guess I assumed you ran the grub commands and booted to Ubuntu.

If system is automatically booting to the command line i.e no grub prompt and not the desktop then that is a new problem.

AK0529 06-26-2022 12:08 PM

I just ran sudo alone and got back a set of commands just like in GRUB, I have a whole set of options for $ sudo -h, it goes all the way V for Version and also Validate as the last on the list just for $ sudo -h

michaelk 06-26-2022 12:30 PM

What you are seeing is just the command line, tty1 is a virtual terminal.

Ubuntu is running but the desktop is not. You can try running the following command to see if it starts.

startx

AK0529 06-26-2022 12:35 PM

That just came back as coand not found

michaelk 06-26-2022 12:44 PM

Try the command:

/usr/bin/startx

AK0529 06-26-2022 12:50 PM

It says command not found and I ran it twice, once with SUDO in front and 2nd without SUDO??

AK0529 06-26-2022 12:56 PM

When I hit TAB it asked if I wanted it to show all 825 possibilities and I hit Y and OMG! Mike it would take me months to sort through all those! ?? What to do now, geez

michaelk 06-26-2022 01:45 PM

Tab completion is just way to automatically fill in the rest of the command or suggest options. Not going to be useful.

Since you never confirmed what iso I can only guess that either you installed the server version or something went wrong with the installation and a desktop was never installed.

You should be able to install a desktop from the USB drive I believe if you can mount it.

sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/sdb /mnt

AK0529 06-26-2022 01:57 PM

Cool, and to be totally honest, I am certainly not sure which one I installed, I am/was a noobie but Im for damn sure getting the crash course now, like I said I'm usually great when it come to this kind of work, all in all from the help from you to the troubleshooting and semi knowing how these systems are I have less the 2 full days in, I'm close to cracking this to full Ubuntu boot up, I'm glad this is a true hobby, but I have some college education in these said field so I'm not completely dumb of it. Lol, thanks again and I will let you know what I discover next here in a few when I input you code. Oh and I'm getting ansy man! FedEx still hasn't delivered my new computer yet! Said by the end of day which is 8pm EST. on Sunday.

AK0529 06-26-2022 02:06 PM

It says can't find /dev/sdb/mnt in /etc/fstab

michaelk 06-26-2022 02:14 PM

Is the USB drive plugged into the computer?

You are not typing the command in correctly. Although the drive might not be /dev/sdb.

AK0529 06-26-2022 02:26 PM

1 Attachment(s)
(see jpg.attachment)As I've Inputted both ways with USB in I've gotten the same response for both commands.

michaelk 06-26-2022 04:11 PM

Your typing in the command wrong.
Code:

sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/sdb /mnt
You are leaving out the spaces. Look up the syntax for the mount command.

AK0529 06-26-2022 04:22 PM

Oh I see said the blind man! I'm getty with that soon, just got my new computer about 30 minutes ago so it's now got my full attention!:)

AK0529 06-26-2022 11:20 PM

Trying it, let's hope it good!

michaelk 06-27-2022 03:46 AM

Again is the USB drive plugged in?
Look at the output of the lsblk ommand.

ondoho 06-27-2022 03:47 AM

Well, it's telling you that /dev/sdb does not exist.
Show us what you got with
Code:

sudo fdisk -l
(he really chose "ak47" as his username... *sigh*)

Here what I got, hope I can get it to boot soon?

michaelk 06-27-2022 08:14 AM

It is booting, to a command line not a desktop.

Not enough of the output shown in that last screenshot to see the USB drive.

As I have suggested several times, on the new computer download antiX and write it to the USB drive then install it to the old computer. Ubuntu 16 is unsupported, has many security vulnerabilities, probably will not work online with secure websites.
