Suse 9.2 32bit and 64bit

is anyone else experiencing this or did i do something wrong? i first had the 64bit version installed and noticed it was running as smooth and would get random lock-up. so i decided to fall back to the 32bit version and just off the initial boot i saw that it was running much quicker. finally got all the installation done and the system is running much faster than the 64bit version. how is this possible? i did everything the same.

I'm hoping that you're on a 64bit motherboard/CPU.. right? Need more information-like your hardware setup.

Suggestions:

If your BIOS isn't at level F.33, upgrade it:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/softwar...-1/SP29481.exe

Disable PNP in the motherboard BIOS.

Run Yast online update, and upgrade everything to the newest. A new kernel patch is out as well. Do all of them.

Make sure your kernel source is installed. /usr/src/linux(your kernel sources should be there)

The winmodem drivers are included with Suse for that chipset. So you're ok there. You can also update that via Yast online as I recall.

You will need to install the NVIDIA drivers.
http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L...-7167-pkg2.run

Simple steps to install.
as root,
init 3
cd /usr/src/linux
make cloneconfig
make prepare-all
./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-7167-pkg2.run -q --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux
modeprobe nvidia
sax2 -m 0=nvidia
Choose your settings and resolution. Save it.
/sbin/ldconfig
reboot

Now test the responsiveness. Good luck.

i have tried all of your suggestion before. it seems i would just end up using the 32bit version. thanks Thoreau for all your help/.

Thoreau 03-27-2005 04:08 AM

No problem.

OhNoesAHause! 03-28-2005 01:42 AM

I was wondering how you reverted back to the 32 bit version I am trying to do the same thing and the YAST installer program does not seem give the option in the preinstall config. I have the boxed set of SUSE which includes the DVD's and the CD's.

novice26 03-28-2005 03:41 PM

i just did a fresh reinstall. during the install menu check the bottom of the screen i think it was F7 to change from 64-bit to 32-bit or vice versa.
