Any clue when 64bit suse 9.2 will be on ftp?
 

Right now Im in doubt whether to use ubuntu 64 bit or suse 9.2 64 bit, but it that one will never be on ftp (or in a couple of months) then Ill probably go for ubuntu (is there a big difference between 9.1 and 9.2 and will it be easy to just upgrade?)

So the basic question is, does anyone know if/when it will be available on ftp?

Every answer to this question, and schedule I've seen says early to mid December.

Is it a good idea to install 9.1 pro 64 bit now and upgrade to 9.2 when it comes available or is it a better idea to completely reinstall?

What Im also wondering: If I install 9.1 and use YOU to completely update everything (will the kernel also be updated?) what will the differences then be with 9.2?

btw: on how many cd's dvd's does 9.2 get shipped? On the old suse site it was listed I believe for 9.1, but now I cant find it anymore :( I believe 5 cd's containing the 32 bit version and then 1 dvd containing both the 32 and 64 bit version? (dual layer?)

Last question: Is it possible to install 9.2 from my harddrive? I have the 5 cd's (iso) but I dont see a boot.iso, I dont have a floppy drive nor do I have 5 empty cds right now.

There will be no 'free' downloadable .iso files available for 9.2 pro from Novell, so I am not seeing another alternative except for an upgrade from 9.1, unless you purchase 9.2 pro.

Yes, the latest (SuSE official) kernel will be available from YOU. You will not have the commercial packages unless you buy the product. Here's a list of the new 9.2 features - http://www.novell.com/products/linux...tures/new.html

About the packages: if I install 9.2 from ftp I assume the 3d drivers from nvidia wont be installed, but iirc, in 9.1 personal they arent included either but you can afterward download them via yast, is this also possible with an ftp install of 9.1/9.2? (these drivers are the only thing I can think of the I want as a "commercial" package (its available for free download anyway, just would be handy if yast could install them for me :))

I dont even want realplayer or acrobat reader, I prefer using the open source alternatives :D

I am not sure what you are saying here. You specifically stated above that you had (5) 9.2 .iso files, that would be illegal if not purchased from Novell.

9.2 YOU includes NVidia drivers. Basically I think you are struggling with the following question. Will 9.2 that I upgrade to from 9.1 be the same 9.2 as the CD version?. The answers is functionally they'd be the the same in every way except for the commercial packages which are only available on the CD's/DVD's.

I thought eveything was under the gpl license or so meaning everything was free and that you were in fact paying for the printed manual :confused: (and pressed cd's) Nevertheless, Ill probably not use it because I want 64 bit ;)

Yes, YOU is YOU. No difference. All patches are available. YaST itself, of which YOU is a part is under the GPL license. Not everything on the 9.2 CD's is GPL, unless they were not made by Novell (.i.e a third party releasing only GPL code).
