after reboot ....gui got all messed up
 

I installed suse 9.3 (x86_64) and things seemed ok, I updated the system through yast and upon reboot, the regular graphic suse graphical login was gone, and had a basic grey screen where I could type in my login and password...after i do that, it does not go into kde or gnome, but a very basic window manager of some kind where I can get an xterm and some options if i right click. I tried typing in xdm, and it seemd to go to display : 1 and would proceed to get to the graphical login and then kde. How can I fix this where on reboot, it will go straight to the suse graphical login and then start kde after i type in login and pass?

just today had the same problem. i couldn't figure out why it was. i did notice that it wouldn't boot into runlevel 5, though. it had something to do with 'ifg-as;lkdfja;sdkf;asldk' <---i can't remember what it was :-D sorry, but because of this one thing it wouldn't load in runlevel 5.

solution:
reinstalled suse :-D if there is something better, please let me know, because i just now upgraded everything, and if it does it again, i'm gonna need to find a real fix. i'll post the real name if it gives me problems again.

I had the same problem on my last install.

I never figured out what the problem is. I've gone back to version 9.1 temporarily and will probably try 9.3 again.

hey i had the same problem yesterday but i reinstalled and it was fine and tonight i was changing my resolution and then rebooted and now i have the grey login screen then it goes into gnome but when i open firefox etc they arn't displayed on the taskbar like they normally are and a console was open when i logged in and heres what it sais

Just an educated guess: Before you run a complete re-installation, try to downgrade the latest kdelibs3 patch (re-install from the original source). Sometimes a buggy patch causes trouble.

I read somewhere this is related to the Nvidia driver. I had this problem too, until I edited /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager and /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager and set the values for which display manager and window manager to use as default. For some reason when the Nvidia driver is installed it changes to Xfce and Xdm as the defaults, which is no good if you are a Gnome or KDE user.

hey i changed the /etc/sysconfig/ enteries as you said and its still the same and when i logged into root there to change them when i opened things they appeared on me taskbar but they won't in normal user....everything was working fine until an hour or so ago

oh and how do you downgrade the kdelibs3 patch ? sorry im sorta new to linux lol

Open YaST (works on command-line as well) -> Software -> Install and Remove Software

Select 'Search' in the 'Filter' tab

Search for kdelibs3 and select 'refresh' (or update, not sure about this).

was trying to do that then i rebooted and then i got the grey login screen again only this time after i logged in it stayed there and when i clicked the mouse i got a menu of move, restart, exit, etc and there was the console screen aswell so i had to reinstall :(

well i had to reinstall as i didn't know how to get outta that but anyways you said it had something to do with the Nvidia driver Pcghost well i didn't install it this time so well see how things go thats the 2nd time this has happened to me in the last few days :(

Sorry, I just figure it was misconfigured.
I had problems like this on some computers, grey screen, no login, and after running SaX everything would be fine.

this is vague from memory, apologize if I comfuse things.

Reboot problem
 

This is a bug in Suse 9.3. Follow the very clear instructions about changing back your display manager and window manager to kdm and kde. Reinstalling will not help the problem. Once you change them back according to these instructions, the problem is fixed for good.
