1st Timer wants to set up LAMP on SuSe
Hi all,
having worked with AIX for much of my life (20 years now), I felt it only right that I should have a grown up OS on my home PC. I decided on SuSe (as we have several servers with that distribution at work). I had purchased SuSe Pro 9.0 some time ago and only just got round to installing it. I have got it installed OK, but am unable to get any online updates. Now for the questions:- 1. How easy is it to set up a WebServer? (with PHP support) 2. How easy is it to set up a MailServer? (problems with ISP mailserver unavailability) 3. Can I update to SuSe latest levels with my licence? 4. If 3. is yes, what's the easiest way? I accept that these are very general questions and not having posted before, I am not aware of the usual protocol for asking for advice. If required I will split the questions into different threads. Many thanks. |
You can download opensuse for free, I'm not never used suse before, but I think 10.2 is the latest, so 9 might be a little out dated, for both ease of use and security.
I would recommend updating first, it doesn't really matter which distribution you choose, but setting up a webserver is very simple and straight forward, just google "setting up apache + linux (insert distro title here)" same for mail server, provided that your ISP allows you to run one, (I know mine does not unless I upgrade). |
