How do I turn on things that are listed as off though?

In alsamixer? "m" mutes/unmutes.

tuxdev, where is the call to script rc.alsa? I didn't see it in rc.S or rc.local on my machine - are you sure you didn't add it yourself? Or is "alsactl restore" somewhere else? I suppose it amounts to the same thing using aumix or alsactl (except alsactl is better with multiple sound cards).

rc.alsa is in rc.M, and the alsactl call is in rc.alsa. I never really touch rc.S, and I don't think you are really supposed to, cause Single User mode is only for recovering your system from something, usually a bad filesystem. It is like Safe Mode in Windows, only much more bare-bones.

Ah, right - thanks! I think I'll switch over to using alsactl and see how I like it. The rc.alsa call isn't in rc.M by default, btw.

Are you sure? It is right after power management stuff and right before custom font stuff on my newly installed 10.2 system. "cat * | grep rc.alsa" reveals it is in only one place.

Once again you're right - it's been added for 10.2 (I've updated from 10.1 and it's in rc.M.new, not rc.M).
