xf86config error

i am having a little issue starting x i ran the xf86config setup but i still am unable to startx i got a a fatal server error: no screens found

how can this be corrected if i set the hsync and verts for my monitor correctly from the specs in the manual and the video card i have is sis 6326 8mb which number 498 from the vendor list

i noticed something though i created a user but when i run startx it hangs but as root it gives me the error right away.

Got a backup?

I've had the same problem a few times trying to get my monitor settings correct. But kept a backup that I could revert too when things didn't go right.

If you don't have a backup of the xf86config file then you will have to use vi from the console to edit it.

The file is in /etc/X11/xf86config from memory.

The no screens error sounds like your have stuffed up one of your monitor settings.

Well what about the hanging under a regualr user account running the startx command why is that happening though.

I use the specs from the samsung manual i don't see why it wouldn't work

Any other suggestions

i noticed that in my xf86config file the vertrefresh section only has;

Code:

VertRefresh (null)
this is not right is it should it be reading the vert settings from the manual?

umm yeh. :p

meh im a beginner but I would assume that not having root access is why your regular account just hangs.

Just a bit of friendly advice: regular accounts should NEVER have root access. A linux box used for home use should have root, then one or more accounts set up as normal users. If you run as root all the time, you run the risk of inadvertantly destroying things. There are security issues too - if you connect to the internet as root, you are potentially allowing hackers to connect to your system as root as well. My two cents...

If you have frequency specs from the vendor, I suggest reading through two docs in the /usr/doc/Linux-HOWTOs directory. (If you don't have this installed, you can find them by going to:

http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/...EX/howtos.html

The docs are XFree86-HOWTO and Xfree86-Video-Timings-HOWTO.
