Praise Bob

Proudly sitting here in my new Slackware bbCap and Tshirt reading all this political crap.
I think everyone has better things too do!
When we are political at least 1/2 the clan is always mad.
The other half may be glad.
But no one is every right or wrong and no one is ever converted by the other side.

John

This reminds me of the "panic" a while back when updates were slow coming.

H_TeXMeX_H 04-19-2012 07:56 AM

The thread will die ... when slackware.com lives ...

dugan 04-19-2012 09:00 AM

I'm not going to "let the thread die" if there's new information to post.

Every product link on store.slackware.com is broken. I don't know if this is related to the server outage, but I've sent Pat an email about it.

I agree.

After all, it would be simple & nice to tell to the audience what happened.
(For ex.: Hey girls & guys the server died!)

If it is not a galaxy secret ;^)

Well, let's see... Mr. Volkerding's dormancy for the last year and his lack of communication on the subject fueled a great deal of speculation.

Mr. Hameleers' comment about old equipment and lack of funds ignited the fire and I'm sure that was totally accidental, but you fanned the flames.

I believe you expressed your regret a few pages back, but what is done is done. Let the thread alone. Heavy handed censorship will only make matters worst.

Yes, I am sorry for this. Yes, I do regret it. My intentions were true and all that. :(

Final addendum to my blog article:

Quote:

Addendum Last

In light of the fact that conversations regarding this topic have, in my opinion, gone in negative and non-constructive directions at the original LinuxQuestions.org thread and elsewhere, and in light of the fact that I was aiming more for support and assistance rather than rock and bottle slinging; I have come to regret starting that thread and writing this article. It was not my intention to stir shit and create strife for Pat V., Eric Hameleers, or anyone in the Slackware community. For this, I apologize. I'm now suspending comment approvals to this article.

To those of you who did offer non-critical assistance and support, thanks. The GNU/LInux community is enriched by your participation in it.

Regards,

~Eric

Fire? Flames? I'm not seeing them. All I saw was one person overreacting, and that would have happened even without vtel57's blog entry.

This thread should be kept open for its original purpose, which is news.

Thanks for this, dugan. It lightens my load a bit. It's true that I am NOT responsible for the behavior of others, yet... I still feel some responsibility for providing the spark.

Anyway, as with all things, this will blow over eventually.

Later...

The spark was there already, it would have happened anyway. It just happened to be your blog post that they saw.

It is! You can get status information, distribution and packages from Slackware mirrors.
Speculation! Assumptions! Have only fueled the problem into something out of control. There is nothing up with the state of Slackware Gnu/Linux. Plain and simple is that Slackware.com hardware problems do exist. Anything we as Slackware users can do? Yes, support it! Not speculate or sensationalize a problem that We cannot fix. 'PV' will have to attend to that with our help! Either by donation or help in kind.

<snip>

I am glad that it matters to you as much as it does to other Slackware users, myself included. Fueling the rumor mills and to someone like 'Caitlyn' will only do more harm. Why discuss something that we cannot control nor fix?

Slackware has always been a target by people who do not fully understand the principals or thorough experience to make justified criticism. I do not know about you but I make changes to my base install to suit my needs. Slackware allows and helps to tweak in a manner that suits my needs. People who use misinformation, FUD or whatever will just continue to criticize. Stroke them softly and maybe they will try Slackware. NOT!

The only personal attacks against me were when the words "stupid" or "liar" were used to describe me. I don't see how those can be taken as anything other than ad hominem attacks. No matter how much you'd like to spin my words and reinterpret them, Dugan, I still didn't say Slackware was going to die anytime soon. Huge clue: I don't think Mandriva (the distro) is in danger of going away either. ROSA Linux is rebranded Mandriva and nobody has suggested that ROSA Labs is in financial trouble. The company, Mandriva, is another matter.

The website is the public face of Slackware. Don't underestimate how significant an outage of six days and counting is.

dugan 04-19-2012 02:05 PM

No, Caitlyn, you're the one who needs a huge clue: you knew from the beginning that that was exactly what your posts were taken to mean, and you did not post an immediate clarification. In fact, the clarification you did post was "I hope Slackware survives". (Which means, captain obvious, that you're worried it won't).

You demonstrably had no problem with this accurate and existant reading of what you wrote until it became inconvenient for you at one point in this thread, which was much later.

Although more days have passed, you still haven't posted a clarification more specific than "I did not say that" (which you've just repeated over and over). Not that there was any other possible meaning to what you actually did write.

Since you appeared (and still appear) to be insisting that you did not write what you wrote, "liar" was not a personal attack but rather a fair comment on how you made yourself come across.

Another huge clue: it's only an "ad hominem" (which is a specifically defined logical fallacy) if I'm saying that specific points that you've made are wrong because you're the one who made them. I did not say that. Stop using words you don't know.

And Onebuck, I don't think it was appropriate to put Caitlyn's name in quotes. Especially since you know it's her RL name.

UPDATE: Caitlyn, you have also alleged that someone said you were "stupid". The forum search shows that this has never happened.
