how about you find out what kind of chipset the thing has and then refer to the bible of linux wireless compatibility:

http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_...s.drivers.html

you should be able to check if your chipset works, and btw, there are a bunch that don't work.

Since then, I have answered my own question:

Will try this wend!

some inboard dell wireless antennas use an unsupported chipset. not sure about other brands, but lots of info at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/linux-dell-laptops if you have a dell.

I use a prism2 chipset linksys pcmcia card and although I've never had a chance to test it out, I've always got it detected and configured. now that it's come up, seems like a good idea to go test it ...

hurricane 10-10-2003 11:31 AM

i emailed the manufacturers and they said its a prism 2 chip set! so i suppose that means im getting somewhere.

the blue light flashes every now and then, but not sure if its working. how do i see if its dected it?

yocompia 10-10-2003 11:35 AM

try searching through the output of "$ dmesg | less" to find any mention of your card/chipset. another good idea is to just try "# iwconfig" to see if the card comes up under that. if it does, you're money.

it should come up if you're booting the bare.i kernel, but if you've configured the options for wireless cards out of your kernel, you may have to add them back in.

hurricane 10-10-2003 11:40 AM

:( :(

no to both :(

hurricane 10-10-2003 11:41 AM

it dosnt even recognise iwconfig as a command

yocompia 10-10-2003 11:52 AM

ok, are you running the bare.i kernel (default with slack)? if so, you SHOULD (it does on 9.0) have the prism2 modules loaded on boot. to check if it's inserted in the kernel, issue "# lsmod" (do you understand that # => root and $ => non-root?) and look for entries like orinoco, hermes, etc. (i think these are the drivers for the prism2 chipset...). if these are absent, try doing "# modprobe orinoco" and then checking "# lsmod"s output (1 means it's being used). then try checking the output of "# iwconfig".

i don't have any experience with integral (built-in) wireless cards, so maybe you should contact your distributor (compaq, etc.) and ask if the card is PCMCIA or something else.

hurricane 10-10-2003 12:03 PM

thankyou everso much for baring with me :)

at first it didnt find orinoco but i did what u suguested. and alas the output is 0. so i guess that means it isnt configured :(

yocompia 10-10-2003 12:18 PM

if that went ok, try the rest of what i said: issue "# iwconfig" and see if anything comes up. if it does, then we're on the right path and try "# ifconfig <name of device> up" where <name of device> is obtained by looking at the device name under iwconfig (e.g. eth0, eth1, etc.).

it might not be the right module, but i'd do some investigating to learn more about that integral wireless card. find out what kind of card it is, get an identifying name and what type of card it is. just for an example of what you should know, i'll list important stuff about my wireless card:

name : netgear MA311
chipset : Prism 2.5 Wavelan chipset
type : PCI

other types of cards are USB and PCMCIA. this determines the protocols and hardware whereby the card communicates with the mobo. from my info, i know that i have to use the orinoco_pci module to get this sucker to run (unless i want it in AP mode...).

for future reference, try to add more info to your posts, like the output of "# lsmod" or maybe choice sections of your "$ dmesg" (usually not all of it, but sometimes it's necessary) that you think are important to the problem at hand. that way, we can get this stuff fixed quicker.

hurricane 10-10-2003 12:30 PM

iwconfig gives this output

root@laptop:/home/hurricane# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

i found out that my card is a SparkLan WL-383F

it says on the label underneath my laptop that its a "11 mbps wireless lan mini pci card"

yocompia 10-10-2003 12:35 PM

in that case, try "# modprobe orinoco_pci" and go through the iwconfig business again.

hurricane 10-10-2003 12:50 PM

i ran modprobe

root@laptop:/home/hurricane# modprobe orinoco_pci
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/orinoco_pci.o.gz: init_module: N o such device
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/orinoco_pci.o.gz: Hint: insmod e rrors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/orinoco_pci.o.gz: insmod /lib/mo dules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/orinoco_pci.o.gz failed
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/orinoco_pci.o.gz: insmod orinoco _pci failed

and this is a bit of what dmesg chucked out

ok, this is interesting. i see the orinoco modules in your dmesg output, which says that they load on boot, so the output from "# lsmod" would also be helpful. i also looked up your card and found a data page on the thing, notice that it's USB:

http://www.sparklan.com/datasheet/11...USB_rev1.1.pdf

also look at Q6 on page 3 of the following

http://www.sparklan.com/datasheet/NIC_FAQ.pdf

it says the linux driver is on some CD.

also check out the part in the wireless bible link i proivded (earlier post) and look at the sections around "5 Orinoco USB cards and HP/Compaq multiport." another thing to try is the orinoco_plx module.

keep diggin, you'll get it
