Whoo Hoo!!!

I just got my Slack 9.1 in the mail and I got it installed as fast as i could, and I think it is the best version I've tried, and also the best distro by far :) What are your opinions on it?

carboncopy 10-06-2003 10:43 PM

I second that!

I am using bittorrent to share my isos. :)

flamesrock 10-06-2003 10:43 PM

Personally, I love it. Fast, stable and modern. And the installpkg command is VERY convenient.

Questions

How did you do your install? Did you do it from floppy like the how to? Or, did you do it from another distro? I want to install from Mandrake, easier ya know?

I want to see it myself. I tried Gentoo but it don't like dial-up modems I guess. Do you have dial-up?

Sorry for all the questions. You got me started. :tisk:

:D :D :D :D

Just finished the Slack 9.1 install today and it rocks. Very fast and, unlike some 9.0 issues, was able to get my video working great. I was also pleased to see the option to select what the sysem load on boot. As a noob, this is very helpful for getting started in learning linux. Once I get it tweaked to my liking, this might be the install that has me "format c:" once and for all. :)

The install is surprisingly easy. Just take the plunge. You will *NOT* regret it
When you restart the comp after installation (assuming you installed KDE) type startx after login.

After that, you can easily edit /etc/inittab changing the line with the number 3 (that's default) to 4 which will automatically boot you up into a graphical interface.

Of course, alot of slackers prefer the command line on startup, but I"m guessing you don't. I like the graphical login myself.

Could I ask you though (since I want to try gentoo)-- is it *necessary* to have an internet connection while compliling gentoo from the source, or could you upgrade the packages afterward?

dalek 10-06-2003 11:23 PM

I did mine with no internet access at all. Came from the CD's only. There is one command that I changed. Here it is:

How to says "emerge -k genkernel"

I changed to "emerge -K genkernel"

The lower case 'k' is to get from net, the uppercase 'K' gets from CD. It will usually get it from the CD anyway but this one command I had to change. The others worked with 'k' and did not get from the net.

I loved the install and I plan to start over again. I had to do something wrong, just don't know what. I compiled ppp in but it says it is not there when I try to connect.

Help any? It is really nice. Very, very fast.

yes, trickykid is right, i ordered it from the Slack store. i thought i should buy it this time since i was such a fan of 9.0 ;) i just started my subscription to it. i love it ^_^

Thetawaves 10-08-2003 02:21 AM

grrr

slack 9.1 does not like older hardware thus i hate it, but on my up-to-date machine, i love it.

nirvanix 10-13-2003 07:26 AM

There has definitely been an effort to remove some of the quirks of Slackware with the 9.1 release. I've installed it for a mother and her two children (they each have their own PC), and they are really digging it. Gotta start 'em young!
Now if they would just add mouse scrolling to the default install: hey Patrick, that's
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" ;-)

Thetawaves 10-14-2003 01:39 AM

I wish i had started young but ohh well. GRR there never seems to be a point when i dont have a problem with slackware. Or maybe its my graphics card :S

Ravendark 10-14-2003 09:36 AM

Hi,
I don't know if it is a common problem or not but when I installed slack9.1 on my machine I had problems with my sound.
I have a SB Live 5.1 Platinum and the problem was:
I had no sound at the back speakers and the center one was making a crackling sound. Where is IGain in the mixer? (or is it OGain? anyway one of two is missing... I am saying this because when usig 9.0 in order to have the same volume between front and back speakers I had to set recording source IGain)

Zerodark 10-14-2003 02:23 PM

i don't think it is a common problem because i'm using a SB Live at the moment and i don't have this problem. I'm using a 6 speaker setup and i have sound in all of the speakers, and none of them make a crackling sound...
