Hi,

For those that need to get a copy for Slackware Gnu/Linux;

Quote:

You can use Get Slackware Linux or a LQ ISO Slackware image. Once you have downloaded the ISO image and you are using MS Windows then you can use one of the 'MD5SUM' checkers below to verify a valid download. Then use 'Imgburn' at a low burn rate (setting of 4) to insure a valid burn on your hardware.

M$Windows:
Windows Burn tutorial <- 'Nero' Tutorial for the newbies who burn the iso instead of the image of the iso.
Imgburn <- 'ImgBurn is a lightweight CD / DVD / HD DVD / Blu-ray burning application that everyone should have in their toolkit!' + Freeware
-- MD5SUM:
M$Windows iso md5sum checking <- LQ Post on how too
md5sum.exe <- M$Win Application to perform md5sum checking.
winMd5Sum Portable <- FREE + Good for all M$ Windows

For future references you can use Slackware-Links

For when you need additional help you can look at;
Slackware Doc Project

For when you need help by posting to the
Slackware forum then consider reading the following ;

Hi,

I couldn't find anything about Nero from you first link, even scrolling to end of page. I just got an introduction to Kali Linux (Lesson 1: installation).

Also, to burn an ISO image from Microsoft Windows I would rather recommend:
While I am at it, for people wanting to write the ISO image on an USB stick from Windows: I recommend Rufus that is free and open source.

I remind that the ISO DVD Images for Slackware version 14.1 (32-bit as well as 64-bit) are hybrid: in other words they can be used to make a bootable DVD as well as a bootable USB drive.

I should write that in SlackDocs, but feel free to overtake me.

PS To check the cryptographic hash vales (SHA1 and MD5) on Windows one can also use FCIV from Microsoft.

Hi,

Thanks! I corrected the link for the Windows burn tutorial.

I recommend that new user do read the available documentation for Slackware that is on the DVD.

Hi,

We have been having a lot of drive by help desk type queries here at LQ. Jeremy & LQ members have been attempting to address this issue by composing; http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...#faq_lqwelcome

Even in the Slackware forum there have been this type of query by new users. Hopefully referring those users to the FAQ link above will help those new members to help us help them. So please refer that link when you feel necessary so we can address the on-going issue with drive by post(s)/threads that sometimes lack information or poorly written.
Hope this helps.
Have fun & enjoy!

Hi,

For members who are not aware of the the Flashplugin updates for Slackware by Alien_Bob; http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slac...-plugin/pkg64/
&
http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slac...er-plugin/pkg/

You will need these plugins for the arch in use be it x86_32 or x86_64.
Hope this helps.

Where to go from here?

'man bash' is friendlier (and more helpful) than this thread.

I'd vote to remove the sticky and the prickly mod in one swoop.

Didier Spaier 09-03-2015 02:08 PM

@certainquirk: I would have expected a constructive and friendly message after more than two silent years.

Hi,

Some new Slackware users may not be aware of useful tools that Alien_Bob has made available for their use;
Quote:

From http://www.slackware.com/~alien/

Some useful scripts I wrote (like the infamous mirror-slackware-current.sh)
If you wish to mirror Slackware then use the mirror-slackware-current.sh to create one locally. Very convenient!

Be sure to look at http://www.slackware.com/~alien/tools/

Here, you'll find scripts and programs that I wrote and use on my own computers. They may be useful for you, too. I appreciate feedback if you do find something useful.
Eric Hameleers < alien at slackware dot com >
I have used loads of Eric's scripts and depend on several well written scripts over the years. Try them, You'll like them!
Hope this helps.

@Didier:

This has nothing to do with me. This is about an 8 yr old, cumbersome thread posing as helpful (sticky) and a mod with a blown fuse.

How so?

UPDATE (so as not to add yet another post)

@certainquirk - So without answering any questions or providing usefull discussion, you continue to troll and stir muck (post 434), baiting others for a response and blaming them, the responses, for the useless posts.

If you just want to pi$$ down someone's back, please find another place to do it, it is absolutely not appreciated here.

Here they go again... sigh...

Did you post this only to illustrate the growing problem of drive-by posts with no useful content? Please follow and read the helpful link in onebuck's post above.

If you don't want to use Slackware then by all means... go some place else, and good luck. But please refrain from polluting the information sources used by those who do use Slackware, including this very useful and frequently referenced thread...

If you don't like this thread, just rate it accordingly. If you think that onebuck does a bad job as a moderator, tell him directly or to Jeremy: as a forum user I am not in concern. Also, personal attacks are forbidden on LQ, and rightly so.

certainquirk 09-03-2015 03:12 PM

How many useless new posts in the last hour now? (Without counting the useless retorts there will be to this one?)

How many times have the same 10 or so links been posted in the last 400+ posts?

How many of those posts are the mod attacking someone for pointing out the obese and repetitive nature of the thread?

How many others are those who chime in with deflections and all other sorts relevance fallacies?

How long have I spent on this thread that I could have been doing dependency checking?

All rhetorical questions, of course.

Have a good day! :)
