Pat V. certainly has good reason not to switch. I have been running the testing kernel since Slackware 10.0 was released. Kernel versions 2.6.x support my SCSI hardware much better than recent 2.4.x kernels do. I've never had any issues, apart from initial configuring ALSA and things like that. But I notice that in some parts the 2.6.x series is a moving target. There is still a lot of work going on in fundamental parts, like file systems, USB support, and devfs/udev.
Maybe, Pat doesn't want to make the switch because he doesn't want to have users lots of difficulties with every upgrade just because devfs is replaced by udev and device names for USB devices change for the thirteenth time....
Stability in Slackware includes stability of the overall environment, I guess. But as I said, I don't actually know this for sure.
Maybe someone wants to approach Pat directly, and post the reply here, then? It's not that important to me, but I am still interested.
