Now the hunt for ISO:s will begin, hopefully on a mirror wery soon :D

Nan 06-23-2004 06:47 PM

Already downloading it from a FTP :D

rotvogel 06-23-2004 06:49 PM

What's wrong with the bittorrent download? Downloadspeeds are about 400 KB/sec over here using bittorrent . No need to wait for mirrors. http://www.slackware.org/torrents/index.html

upset 06-23-2004 06:53 PM

Fuel 06-23-2004 06:57 PM

lupin_the_3rd 06-23-2004 06:57 PM

So, if I'm running current with a 2.6.7 kernel isn't this 10?

rotvogel 06-23-2004 06:59 PM

If you installed the latest updates your current has become 10.0.0 :)

lupin_the_3rd 06-23-2004 07:01 PM

so easy... how great!

I'm going to try making my own iso from the slack-current tree (this will be my first attempt).............just updated the whole tree last night on my machine and will follow the instructions in the isolinux directory..........;)

Fuel 06-23-2004 07:32 PM

k

now speed in increasing ~ 55 kb/s .. 5/6 hrs for each iso ( 1 & 2 ) will leave my pc on over night sharing bandwidth with you guys ( 10Mbit speed )

zzzzZZzzleeping :o ( dreaming of fresh slack isos )

2damncommon 06-23-2004 07:52 PM

Awl jest be a waitin on my sub, thank you.

rotvogel 06-23-2004 07:52 PM

For people who don't know/understand bittorrent:

- install the bittorrent client from the extra dir (needs python)
- download the torrents (about 50 KB each)
- start the client in a terminal/console using :
Code:

btdownloadcurses.py --max_upload_rate <number> slackware-10.0-install-d1.torrent

<number> should be max 80% of your upload speed in KiloBytes.
Repeat for the other iso's

:)

veritas 06-23-2004 07:55 PM

download commencing!!

(at a staggering 30 kb/s on Azureus)

moger 06-23-2004 08:42 PM

I have been using swaret all the time to update my system. So I pretty much already have Slack 10.0 and I shouldn't bother upgrading right?

Netizen 06-23-2004 08:45 PM

rgr. If you are all up to date...kernel and all than yes.

jspaceman 06-23-2004 09:06 PM

I notice there are 4 ISOs. I take it I just need the first 2 ISOs to do an install? The other two are optional?

liquidtenmilion 06-23-2004 09:07 PM

If you use slackware current and updated anytime recently(within the past few days when you saw updates for mozilla 1.7 and some others) youare now using slackware 10.

Also you might want to consider using swaret to update. It will be a much smaller download(only downloading what you need). All you need to do is edit your /etc/swaret.conf and changed version=9.1 to version=10.0 and put one of those 10.0 mirrors there.

Yes, you are correct. The 3rd and 4th are only needed if you want the source.

ringwraith 06-23-2004 09:46 PM

Rather than using swaret, you might consider keeping up to date by rsyncing your own mirror and then upgradepkg ing from that.

320mb 06-23-2004 09:50 PM

LMAO, I just looked thru all the packages including pasture and extra.................
Pat took swaret out ------ oh well it was a crappy prog anyways.

Couldn't you just leave the "version=" section to "version=current", if you are running -current?

lupin_the_3rd 06-23-2004 10:07 PM

where are the 10.0 mirrors... they appear to be the same so it would seem changing version=current to version=10.0 would work but update fails... I'm new to this so... maybe I'll just stick with current...

Netizen 06-23-2004 10:09 PM

yeah current will work just fine.

Crashbox 06-23-2004 10:29 PM

i am glad to see v10 finally available and i am glad to see everyone happily downloading the iso's....but for those of us who can spare the change let's not forget to swing by here and do what we can to support the project.....

sigma957 06-24-2004 12:05 AM

And if you want to double check, find a favorite mirror and check out the new upgrade.txt. Pat does a great job of explaining things and he tells you what you can safely remove. I found a few things to get rid of.

A Proud Slacker!

Since I'm a subscriber, I'll just wait for my CD set. :D

mardanian 06-24-2004 02:03 AM

heh, im on dialup can't dl the latest 10 :)
i will appreciate if someone gifts CD 1 and 2 to me :D

thanks in advance

brain_bucket 06-24-2004 02:48 AM

I would definitely recommend you buy the CDs from the slackware store and support the project, but if you're short on cash and have dial up you can get cheap CDs from the websites in this post:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...027#post985027

EDIT: Probably none of the websites have the CDs yet, but it will only be a matter of time.

Highlights of the 10.0 release include GCC 3.3.4 (with GCC 3.4.0 as an alternate in /testing), the Linux 2.4.26 kernel (with Linux 2.6.7 as an alternate choice in /testing)
Does this you get the choice of using the 2.6.7 kernel when installing slackware 10?

thekore 06-24-2004 04:01 AM

/me runs swaret :D

I don't think you do, but there are full instructions for upgrading :)

Hm, I would like to subscribe, but I don't know which methods of payment are accepted. Only credit card?

jspaceman 06-24-2004 06:21 AM

Anyone know where the md5sums for the Slackware 10.0 ISOs are posted? I can't find them on the Slackware website.

rotvogel 06-24-2004 06:24 AM

Here they come:
2464f68acde7b4ad197e2a77a5ac5dc9 slackware-10.0-install-d1.iso
39517cd115ef8cd0a4d56d21cd6266de slackware-10.0-install-d2.iso
51896df07759e240b612aa526be099c4 slackware-10.0-source-d3.iso
53ad523e79fe422b43bbe3637030baed slackware-10.0-source-d4.iso

jspaceman 06-24-2004 06:36 AM

Thanks. One more question, I downloaded the first two ISOs from BitTorrent. I notice that it also downloaded the md5 files (slackware-10.0-install-d1.iso.md5) and the .asc files (slackware-10.0-install-d1.iso.asc) for each ISO.

How do I use the .asc file? I know it has something to do with GPG and checking the authenticity of the md5 and ISO files against the file creator's private GPG key, or something like that. But what is the syntax to do that?

Grunty 06-24-2004 09:00 AM

Anybody knows a good slack 10 mirror other than those in slackware site? They're always full :(. I can only download the iso from our school since im on dial up. My school unfortunately blocks torrents.

I cant wait :)

AlteZza2k2 06-24-2004 09:17 AM

i was wondering about the install, since we have to option to select 2.4.26 or 2.6.7 and we can also select between gcc 3.3.4 or 3.4.0, should i choose the latest and greatest even though they are under "/testing"? also, if i do decide to go with those, i would i select those during the the install?

sh1ft 06-24-2004 09:24 AM

Wooooohoooooooooooooooooooo!!

Now I can change my avatar from slackware-current to slackware 10.0! YES!

MunCH 06-24-2004 09:49 AM

Guys instead of clogging up the ftp mirrors, why not use a bit torrent client, I have been using azureus, its pretty fast and better than waiting for a slow d/l to finish, Oh the agony! hehe

http://azureus.sourceforge.net/

all you need is java installed, by the way the info on slackware says " with Linux 2.6.7 as an alternate choice in /testing" does this mean I can install that during installation instead of the default kernel?

Cheers

MunCH

Yes, I looked and they only accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.

ringwraith 06-24-2004 10:47 AM

Bittorrent is downloading for me at my max speed of 50 k/s.

liquidtenmilion 06-24-2004 10:54 AM

All of the ftp servers are going slow, so i recommend using torrents, as now you will get the fastest transfers possible becauase everyone downloading slackware 10.

Nixon 06-24-2004 11:33 AM

Yeay bit-torrents going cool for me 2. Started at 1kbs ( :D ) for about 5 mins then sped up to around 40kb, my max being around 50.

r_jensen11 06-24-2004 11:52 AM

Damn it! And I just got 9.1 ironed out! NOOO!!!!

SBing 06-24-2004 11:54 AM

Yeh, my torrent speed was pathetic this morning, but I just left it running while I was at work and it's finished downloading disk2...left that seeding and started disk1 :)

Should be done before the weekend anyway ;)
