I'm just curious. Slackware empowers the user, but its price is having an understanding of what is going on. Are most Slackers IT professionals? So, what do you do?

Well, let me be the first to not fit the profile of IT professional :). I am a registered nurse by profession with 22 years experience in an Intensive Care Unit, only 10 years to go before retirement!

I am an elementary school teacher currently in my 28th year. I have a BA in Psychology/Philosophy and a professional teaching certificate. I'm a technology hobbyist who thoroughly enjoys Slackware. :)

I'm a system administrator for Windows networks.

I'm a software engineer working in the air traffic control industry.

I'm on my way to becoming an architect :)

I'm a retail associate and technical hobbyist. However, I intend to enter the IT industry (pursuing a college degree at the moment).

i'm an audio/TV/HTR repair tech. other than using slack for home computers, i use slack at my workplace as a test bed for newer HTR equipment that is web capable.

U.S. Army forward observer, but come August I'm changing to a network admin field (still Army)

I have no need for work, as I am a french aristocrat and sole heir of the Montblanc snail farm empire.

I do, however, have worries, as peasents do, about my future solvency. I find myself down to my last two diamond studded umbrella's, although I am still in possession of a life sized camel made entirely out of gold, which my late father discovered and spirited out of Egypt while on an archeological dig there.

I just finished an Engineering degree in robotics, looking for work now :) Slackware worked at treat as my university workstation, running simulations and writing my thesis in Vim+Latex.

I get a lot of flack for my job so I won't exactly spell it out for everyone. But I am sure you can figure it out. I still remember the look on my wife's face when I told her what I would be doing.

Me: So I got I new job today. But you aren't going to like it.
Her: You got a new job what, what's not to like?
Me: I will be designing *adult educational* websites.
Her: * disappointed look on her face* Oh...

I'm a friction saw operator at an investment castings foundry.
Still have all my fingers (so far).

unix sysadm (and, now occasionally, BOFH) at the datacenter of a local University.

Part owner (1/3) of small IT company, mainly serving financial companies (equities etc). Work mainly on Solaris and Sybase, most development done with Python, SQL and a smidgeon of C. Slackware preps you nicely for Solaris work.

I'm just a college student who just barely switched majors to comp sci.

I breed captive pandas, my specialty being artificial stimulation.

What exactly is this *occupation* stuff yer all on about?




For the record, and in no particular order- security guard, truck driver, metallurgist, cab driver, machinist, advertising copywriter & account executive, business owner (multi-national franchise, I owned 4 centres over a 12 year period), office administrator, retail business manager, cook.

I'm currently 53, and trying to decide what-to-reinvent-myself-as for the stretch drive to permanent retirement....

Data analyst for an insurance company...working with Crystal reports and tons of oracle queries. A little MS Access design work and some sql server too....

Presently unemployed. In the past I've been mostly self-employed as a musician and a guitar instructor. I went to school for computer networking a few years back, and graduated in the spring of 2009... who the hell was hiring green IT guys at that point? They still aren't. Right now I'm picking up a few additional classes (can't hurt, I guess) and getting rehearsed to try going back onstage after being out of it for quite a long time. My wife and I have also comitted to getting my grandparents old farm (now owned by my parents) back on some kind of a paying basis next summer.

I've no idea what I do! But at a pinch... Former astronomer, now running a couple of small businesses, one of which has investor funding. My current job title is "Chief Scientific Officer" - which I find faintly amusing.

Also, I travel through time in a police box and drive about 1970s London in a Ford Granada shouting "Yer nicked!"... no wait, those are my favourite TV shows.

Retired software engineer -- started with IBM punch card stuff in 1961, onward and upward through Honeywell GECOS, Z-80 boxes, Unix System 3, System 5, Solaris, Windows (corporate America, dammit), Slackware (tried other flavors of Linux, didn't like 'em, stick with Slackware).

I'm currently a part-time instructor (Intro to Computers/Windows, MSOffice, maintaining/securing home networks, etc) at a nearby junior college continuing education department. I was able to retire ten years ago from a job as a Metrology Specialist (they couldn't call me an Engineer because I didn't have a degree) at a nearby nuclear power station. I was working on the degree, but didn't finish until about a year after I retired. So I have a degree in Computer Science. Oh, on 28Dec, I'll have been an amateur radio operator for 52 years. I passed my first exam on my 14th birthday in 1958.

Formally and nominally I am a Civil Engineer. Freelance programmer on my spare time, but only for fun. (worked as such for profit once -as chief of the programming department- for an IT company that became something like, well, Enron. Yes they do owe me lots of money which some day I will collect, either by reasonable methods or by any means necessary; and they are the reason I decided not to work for anyone byt myself). Guitarist and singer (have not published my music; most of it was dedicated to my girlfriend). *Skilled* military strategist. Martial artist. Amateur pilot. Historian and loremaster. Theologist, angelologist and demonologist. Political science expert. Bon vivant when I can afford to enjoy life as it is supposed to be.

Most of my work now consists in dealing with businesses, contracts, budgets, work planning and strategy and advisory. Personal management too. Evaluation of studies and projects.

I am a pastor for the R.K. Church. I discovered slackware/linux isn't restricted to IT-people. It's a great distro for anyone who is motivated to reed and do some research on the subject of Linux. I allways liked to solve puzzles and Slackware is the Distro for me as a normal user. More than any other distro I can adapt it to my likings. Allthough I do not possess enough knowledge and skills to help and develop software (for SlackBuilds-org for instance). In my work I am also maintaining the parish website.

By the way, a very healthy and joyfull 2011 for all the people on this forum!

first 15 years as a commercial pilot/flight instructor, the past 20 years as an elementary school teacher, teaching gifted kids where I provide a proper computing environment for them i.e., Slackware on all their laptops...I do keep one winbox in the room for the "slow learners" ;-)

This is my abbreviated CV

I am a Senior Head of Technical Services at Malta Air Traffic Services. My interest in UNIX started in 1994 when I got a 15 minute course on QNX, later I got involved in projects that entailed some skills in Solaris (1999) and eventually in True64 on which our ATC system works. Now we are moving to (customised RHEL) Linux and we use CentOS for Radar Evaluations. I deploy Slack and Zenwalk for various small but demanding applications, like collecting debugging files and 24/7 LAN sniffing.

By trade I am an Electrical Engineer, but I specialised in Communications.

Microsoft SharePoint Admin. It's nice to have some Slackware sanity after a full day of SharePoint.

Interesting posts. I'm a prosthodontist and also a teacher at the local University (same field).
Besides the non IT Slackers here I'm amazed by people like Con Kolivas, being an anesthesiologist and 'amateur' kernel hacker ;-)

i'm a dietary aide at a nursing home.

i wash pots and pans, and serve old people food.

i just love linux and slackware is my favorite ;)

At the moment a numeracy tutor (full-time) and running a small web design business.
