One of the reasons for dropping Gnome from Slackware-current and suggesting instead to rely on the third-party projects then providing it for Slackware has been stated in the ChangeLog for Slackware 10.2 on Sat Mar 26 23:04:41 PST 2005:

GNOME is and always has been a moving target (even the "stable" releases usually aren't quite ready yet) that really does demand a team to keep up on all the changes (many of which are not always well documented). I fully expect that this move will improve the quality of both Slackware itself, and the quality (and quantity) of the GNOME options available for it.

In my opinion Mate instead is not a moving target, and keep up all the changes is doable by a single person, as shown by the MSB project (thanks Willy), and by its inclusion in Slint. This being said, this is not a request from me, let alone a demand, just a suggestion. I will just point out that Mate is by far the most accessible desktop for visually impaired users. Maybe Plasma-$new will become as accessible, but we are not there yet.
