celeron

any experience with installing slackware on a machine running a celeron cpu??? just curious to know if there are any performance problems with those chips on linux.

There a a lot of celeron CPUs around. So which one ?

If have a celeron 400A and no probs at all :)

Zerokule 09-24-2004 10:29 AM

As long as it is an X86 based processor and better than your base 486 it will run linux, so a celly will do just fine.

i don't actually have one, but i saw a pc for sale on a newsgroup for 400 bucks and it's a celeron 1.7 ghz. i was just curious if people have run into problems with compiling and stuff.

Yes - 'ave ran a variety of Slackware distributions on P4 Celerons with no noticeable performance issues.

The ones that are based on socket 478 are great!

For a desktop computer running linux, the celeron is a good chip.

But for the same price as a celeron chip you can get an AthlonXP that can really out preform the celeron. . .

Yes, in addition, looks like the new Celeron D and Sempron provide adequate performance/price - nice additions - we seem to be getting a reasonable deal these days re. processors and mainboards - all good :)

I don't know where you are located but you can get a faster pentium or Athlon system for that price most places in the US.

I have a Celeron 1.2 ghz laptop that slack ran fine on - its 2 years old-
This is what you can get around here for that price

Brand New P4-2.4 w/DVD+-R/RW Burner

I just upgraded my 6 year old slackware based home server from an Intel PIII w/SE440BX motherboard to a celeron 2.0Ghz with an Intel D865GBFL motherboard, and I couldn't be happier. It runs very stable, is quiet, uses low power, and runs very cool, at least compared to my space heater...er...Athlon gaming system.

Your needs may vary, but these things are important to me due to the fact the machine is NEVER turned off, and the configuration will last me for my server needs for several years. If you want absolute price vs. performance and just plan on upgrading again within a year, go Athlon. But if you are looking for a higher quality and stable machine that you want to keep running for 3 or more years, definately go the Intel / Celeron route.

Yep, I like a good cool, long running system, but now the Xp based semprons look good too running less watts than the celeron, so another way to go perhaps...

davidsrsb 09-26-2004 09:09 PM

The problem with Celerons and Durons is the dodgy motherboards sold with them, some ALI and SIS chipsets do give problems. The CPUs themselves work just fine.

WMD 09-26-2004 10:27 PM

The Celeron is really just a Pentium 4 (or 3, from that era), but with less cache and a slower bus. Theoretically you could overclock the bus and lower the multiplier to achieve similar performance, but that's beyond the scope of this thread.

reguardless of what the zelots for source based distros say (*cough gentoo*). Binary distros rarely run into problems having to do with archetecture compatability. especially running a 1.7ghz celeron which is basically a pentium 4 with a small cash.

Iv been running slackware 9.1 on a 500mhz celeron for about 9 months w/ no problems what so ever.

sorry, unintentional double post;

hmm...so i guess the celerons have been fixed?

i had thought there was a design flaw in them
that made the L2 completely unusable...but that
was years ago.

nice to know they are no longer broken
