Redhat 8.0 security fixes
Since RH8.0 went EOL and Fedora Legacy has discontinued updates for 8.0, I am curious what others are doing to keep track of security fixes for 8.0?
I am quite happy with 8.0 but looks like I may be forced to change because of lack of security fixes. It sounds like whatever version of Fedora I pick I will end up going through the same thing in a relatively short period of time. Considering whiteboxlinux but not sure if I will run into the same thing for security fixes. |
Whitebox Linux is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, so my guess is that they'll try and stay current with whatever changes Red Hat makes. The EOL cycle on the RHEL is much longer (up to 7 years now, I think) so I don't think you'll be in any danger unless Whitebox stops supporting their distribution.

I am not sure if this is still true but last I read whitebox is only one person. However since I already have the CDs even if he stopped supporting Whitebox I assume just following RHEL updates I would be all set for the next 3 years. (really 7 years but I know I would likely upgrade again in 3) The only thing I am unsure of is whether direct updates from an RHEL mirror would be a problem. I assume I would run into the logo/copyright problem which I think means I would need to look at the source rpms and strip to logos/copyright stuff? |
time for transitioning
You could continue to use RH 8.0 through 2005 with Progeny's Transition Service, for only a few bucks per month. did you look at that option?
