please advice me

i have the mandrake 9.2 with kernel 2.4.22-10, i'am happy with it , but i would like to upgrade to the 2.4.28.
i would like to install the kernel source.rpm and start patching :
- from where do i start? 2.2.23 or what?
- is it better to upgrade first to the 2.4.22-37 via mandrake rpm and then start patching or it's no difference?
and last, can i disable features in the kernel to make it smaller and faster??
thanks guys

hi there

what u can do is get ur 2.4 kernel
patch it
and then load the config file of ur present kernel in ur new kernel( mostly u can find it in /boot )
now u have that configuration of ur kernel that works for u

change the way u like but i advice u to go slowly so that if u do not get a working kernel then u should be able to revert back

thanks guys, but masand could you tell me please which patch to start with , (2.4.23..??) i have kernel 2.4.22-10
thanks

get the latest patch or better get the latest kernel from kernel.org

well i am not comfortable with these patches instead of patching them i get the whole linux kernel source file

thanks man, i'll do as you like, but i would like to recompile the new kernel with the same settings as the old one , is that possible?

masand 01-08-2005 06:36 AM

that what i said

locate the config file of ur working kernel
(generally in /boot)
then in ur extracted kernel source
make xconfig

then load up that config file and save and exit
and compile ur kernel

regards
