MDK 10.1 official download???

its almost been a month since it has been officially released and i would like to know when it will become pubically avaiable ( official) . i need it b/c my moms NEW mobo and printer dont work right and im sick of 500mb updates.

opjose 11-19-2004 05:41 AM

Eh, it's been available for about that time, just not in full ISO form.

To obtain it you need to download the boot.iso file, and burn it to disk.

Then use this to perform an over the internet/network install.

SlipAway172 11-19-2004 01:47 PM

well i have t o install it on 3 computers running on a DSL 256down and 128up and i dont want to do that. it would take 72 hours to install on all of them. when will the iso be released

caladbolg 11-19-2004 03:28 PM

Strange, it should have been released by now...I'm not sure what's wrong with Mandrakesoft...

That's not true.

You only need the boot.iso and download from the first machine.

Then use it to grab the files from the repository.

Use the same boot.iso file to install the already downloaded RPM's from the first machine you have set up.

It's actually faster this way than a CD based install.

And to answer your question, the ISO is available to Club Members.

caladbolg 11-20-2004 08:41 AM

He said "when it will be publically available". The public version hasn't been released yet.

opjose 11-20-2004 08:49 AM

"Official" has been up for some time now, just not in ISO format.

Johng 11-21-2004 02:25 PM

Hi Opjose

I have run a boot.iso CD, which recognises my RealtekIRTL-8139 network card which is connected to my router.

Can you offer guidance on what I need to do next. I assume I choose the FTP and DHCP options, but don't know what I need to enter into the address spaces.

opjose 11-21-2004 04:30 PM

If your router is set up to dole out address via DHCP, just select that.

You should get a message that the network is being brought up and it should continue if it can.

If it fails you will have to manually enter an IP address, netmask and gateway address for your subnet.

Johng 11-22-2004 03:56 AM

Thanks for that, Opjose

My router is set up with my ISP username and password, but does not appear to connect.

How do I know or where do I find the IP address, netmask and gateway address?

The router address is 192.168.1.254

opjose 11-22-2004 06:12 AM

Eh, your router connects to your ISP.

Unless it utilizes something like PPOE, there is no username and password required (usually).

If your router's LOCAL Ip address is 192.168.1.254

Then your workstation can use any address from 192.168.1.2 thru 192.168.1.253

Your netmask will be 255.255.255.0 and your gateway will be 192.168.0.254

Johng 11-22-2004 03:13 PM

Thank you again opjose. There are time when my ignorance is painful, and this is one of them.

Under normal conditions, Mandrake recognises my network card and connects to my router (192.168.1.254) which connects to my ISP using the pre-configured address in the router.

When the boot CD runs, it recognises my network card, I then have the choices: NFS server, FTP server, HTTP server, CDROM, Hard disk. If I choose NFS or FTP, I then have the options: Static, HDCP, ADSL.

HDCP asks for a Host name and Domain name. I don't know the answers to these inspite of the suggested "mybox" and "mybox.xxxx.com".

Static asks for addresses, I tried:
IP of this machine: 192.168.1.254
IP of DNS: 192.168.1.253
IP of Gateway: 192.168.0.254
Netmask: 255.255.255.0

The response was: "Could not configure network". Looking at the log, it stated that the network was already running.

Supermarine9 11-22-2004 03:54 PM

To answer specifically about when the 10.1 Official Download ISO's should be available. They are supposed to be available near the end of November, but it may very well end up being in the first part of December too. However, there are some ftp's that have it up for offering already - Mandrake just hasn't officiall realeased the ISO's to the public yet.

You can choose FTP or HTTP depending upon which remote repository you will connect to.

Do not use DHCP (it's DHCP not HDCP), instead choose static IP.

If you are ABSOLUTELY SURE that your router is at 192.168.1.254 then you are telling your Linux box to BE the router.... this doesn't work.

Most routers are actually configured with the FIRST available IP address, in this case it's usually 192.168.1.1. Please verify what the router's IP address is.

Then choose STATIC IP and select

IP of this machine: 192.168.1.12
IP of DNS: 192.168.1.254 (IS this the router?)
IP of Gateway: 192.168.1.254 (IS this the router?)
Netmask: 255.255.255.0

An ignorant's question

I'm new to this forum so hello to everyone!

I'm new to linux although it's been a while that I'm trying to understand some basic things, mostly trying distributions... Now I've bought from a website the official 10.1 distribution and it is a 4 cd set (I guess it should be the basic version of mandrake 10.1 official). The powerpack consists of 6 cds. If I download the 5th and 6th cd image will I be able to use it with the CDs I've bought or do the sets change between basic, powerpack, powerpack+ ? In other words are the first 4 cds identical in the powerpack and basic distribution?

Have a nice day everyone!

:newbie:

Supermarine9 11-23-2004 12:01 PM

No, the first 4 CDs of the PowerPack or PowerPack+ are not the same as the 4 CD Official set.

SlipAway172 11-23-2004 01:56 PM

i emailed mandrakesoft to see what is going on , and all i got was www.mandrakeclub.com to get the iso. well the problem is that im not a member. i have no idea if they will release this one to public....................

opjose 11-24-2004 12:05 AM

Yes they are fairly identical.

The remaining RPM's from the other disks, are largely available from the URPM repositories.

Go here: http://www.zebulon.org.uk/urpmi_en.html

and follow the directions. They apply to 10.1 as well.

Johng 11-24-2004 02:46 AM

Thanks again opjose. Those router addresse were correct (although I have changed them back to 192.168.1.2). The boot CD worked with the addresses as suggested. However the site only offered Mdk 10.1 Community, not the Official I was wanting. I have not been able to find a site with 10.1 Official so far.

opjose 11-24-2004 06:52 AM

No if you see community, you are looking at the ISO's.

The Official ISO's have not been released as ISO's yet, but the entire RPM tree is up on the repositories.

That means you can download the boot.iso file and perform the installation as if you were installing from a remote source.

You end up with "official".

SlipAway172 11-24-2004 09:05 AM

its been awhile since my last email to mandrake soft asking :

Will it be avaiable for public download?
When?
and pointing out it has amost been a frikkin month and what is the problem?

and i have recieved nothing . though i used a different email so i wont be on records.

im starting to feel hopeless for mandrake....................

just to think on 10.0 .... it was released to public like 1-2 weeks after it was announced.

mandrakesoft is starting to piss me off......................... starting to download fedora 3 now.............. u know ,just for backup

   :tisk:

opjose 11-24-2004 09:22 AM

What's the problem installing via the boot.iso file?

SlipAway172 11-24-2004 09:34 AM

i have to install on several computers...... on a 26KByte connection. would take several hours /few days. i dont have that time my computer has to be accessable at ANY time

opjose 11-24-2004 09:39 AM

No, you only need to install it this way on the first computer, then use it as the source for the others.

SlipAway172 11-24-2004 10:37 AM

im not a fan of ftp install i would like cds. i also install linux on computers that dont have nics. i HAVE to have cd/dvd media. and i will also be installing linux on a neighbors computer that only has a 56k .

opjose 11-24-2004 10:56 AM

So your choices are:

1) Buy it.

2) Wait

3) Download from the repositories and burn CD or DVD.

SlipAway172 11-24-2004 11:30 AM

1: dont have money to spend. ( only 15 with a minimual wage job)
2: i need to uphrade to 10.1 NOW ,,,,, my moms NEW abit mobo's sound is not supported and her printer dosent work though is supported.
3: have to have MEDIA!!!!

opjose 11-24-2004 12:03 PM

Then choice three is your only option.

Create your own media.

SlipAway172 11-24-2004 12:36 PM

how? download the tree and burn to dvd?

SlipAway172 11-24-2004 12:42 PM

speaking of the devil.................... EVERYBODY run mandrake update. Xfree and the cd application has LOTS of holes. it says it would be a 90MB update. and released today

opjose 11-24-2004 01:37 PM

Re: Media.

Yes download the entire tree, and burn to disk.

Johng 11-24-2004 02:10 PM

Hi opjose
Can you point me at an ftp site that has 10.1 files?

for crying out loud....search in google....A couple of weeks ago..... you actually made a post about a russian site with the ISO's....

so far I have both the 4 CD download version and the DVD version of mandrake 10.1 just by "googling" around ....

SlipAway172 11-24-2004 03:38 PM

for crying out loud ..........lol

but i have goodled ........ the russian site only has 1-4kbs transfer and get dissconected from all the time from time outs and i have forund the dvd but something is wrong..... on kget it reported the size 338MB and firefox reported 2256MB and i know both are wrong i know it is in the 4GB range. but if u could lend a helping hand could u post some urls

SlipAway172 11-24-2004 03:44 PM

ok amigo.....sorry if I was harsh on you but if there is one thing that I have learned (back from the 14.4 modems) is that you have to have both patience and the tools of the trade....

You need a FTP client that supports resume (smart ftp is a good one), or a download manager (getright) and a "hash analyzer" (do a search in www.download.com for hash makers or readers).

Sites:

ftp.linuxcenter.ru
www.acnova.com (go to the ftp link in the site).

both will be slow but if you leave your machine on 24/7 downloading that stuff, in 3 days tops you will have it. Then you can use the "hash reader" to make sure that the hash is correct (therefore confirming that the file is ok).

Specially for FTP sites, DO NOT USE A WEB BROWSER to download the files. The browsers are prone to miscalculate the size of the file. Use either a download manager or an FTP client (best choice!!).

You could also try bittorrent since there are a lot of sites with mandrake 10.1 torrents. I downloaded 10.0 official that way and it worked ok.

Again, I know you want to please your mom, but she needs to understand that this things do not happen overnight.....

Yeah but at least I have it (MDK 10.1) and you don't ;-) besides, as long as I can serve from the linux box my anime to my XBOX using XBMC, I'm golden........

Your machine specs look dude.....no joke.....have you checked the HCL for mandrake 10.1 64 bit edition to see if it supports everything you got?

Now that you brought the issue of specs how good is that ASUS board? I have been debating which board to use if I decide to upgrade one of the machines at home (not my linux box, although a processor and hardrive upgrade would be welcomed).

SlipAway172 11-24-2004 04:25 PM

i can wait for the 64bit version . i need the 32bit for my mom. and u stated that there are torrents. ive searched and searched and searched ....... but could u post a url with the page with the torrent. and with the russian site. no matter what i automatically get disconnected every 1-2 mins.... and i knwo stuff dosent happen over night..... i have a 256kbs/128kbs connection

I would recommend, even if it is slow, to get the DVD from the russian site......it beats the hell oout of swapping discs...

Lakota 11-24-2004 07:13 PM

I have just assumed by all I have read that one could just simply do a network install of Mandrake 10.1. Mandrake even sent me a newsletter yesterday announcing 10.1 was now available. I assumed that meant to public as I am not a club member as of yet. So..... I checked out their site and 10.1 Official is not up yet.

Option 2, I downloaded boot.iso from ftp://sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch/mirror...nstall/images/
This turned out to be a waste of time as the ftp install options are Mandrake 10.1 Community and a handful of Cookers, no option for 10.1 Official. I did find a screen to manually type in the ftp address to download from with a password and username, no help to me.

Question, has anyone downloaded 10.1 Official by the network install without a password or Mandrakeclub membership, or is it just assumption? I did get the boot.iso file right out of the Official directory as you see from ftp address above. If anyone has actually done this, how?

I see on other posts now, that although the options list Community, it actually installs Official.
That would solve my confusion. Guess I shall try it.

SlipAway172 11-24-2004 07:14 PM

maybe so but the random disconnects pi$$ me off the most..... i had a 56k and im paticent .....i dont care about the download speed but the disconnects get under my skin. ( i leave my computer on 24/7 to prevent thermal stress on my new hardware) but if somebody could create a torrent for the DVD. that would kick butt.....

(using kbear now and on the first iso and only 34% done....... 100MB=1 hour)

SlipAway172 11-24-2004 07:16 PM

dude go to www.acnova.com and they will link to a FAST ftp server with ALL 4 iso and burn them and wallah. ( they are official and not any of that community/ glitchy crap) ;)

Check the other threads here about using boot.iso.

ALSO: http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/in...opic=9345&st=0

You DO get "Official" not community via the network install.

SlipAway172 11-25-2004 07:49 AM

Funny stuff......

my first email to mandrakesoft using my @bellsouth.net account i was told to download it off of mandrakeclub though i VERY DETAILED put that im not a club member and they told me to download off of mandrakeclub!!(WTF?!?!?!??!?!)

on my second email to mandrakesoft using my other email account ( emailed them about 4-5 days ago) and i put in it when (about) would it be release and even if it would be relwased to the public servers so the public can download it AND i still havent gotten a responce back and i dont think i ever will.

that is ONE think i hate about mandrakesoft is the delaying for the public :(

xavierh 11-25-2004 09:44 AM

This is interesting......the question is then how the other sites get them out. I have seen torrents out there with the DVd but that will take almost the same time as to download it from other sources.....

The other question that pops up is why this particular release has been so delayed....It looks like the isos to the public will be released in december.....

SlipAway172 11-25-2004 05:34 PM

mandrake is cheap and want to squeeze the most money out of the packs before they give it out for free

(now downloading 4th iso and still have to do the 2nd bc it was corrupt) ( see i am paticent....... im use to 28+ hour downloads)
