I think the artwork installs the screen savers. I myself started using gnome.. all the screen savers are available in gnome.. I still hav enot updated to get them to work in KDE, but I am starting to like gnome better now :)

KDEArtwork may install some of the screensavers, but it wouldn't make sense that it installs all the available ones on my system now, since I also installed a separate XscreenSaver Open GL package from the Mandrake 9.2 CDs.

As for desktops, I always thought that KDE seemed more polished than Gnome... I'm actually thinking about moving away from Desktop Envi's, and going with a simple window manager... such as BlackBox... have you seen how fast it loads!?

Fixed

Thanks Zipled, I was having the same prob. Your fix helped me out. I wouldn't have had any idea
where to symlink from or to. Gracias!

Hi All,
Have just come across your post. Maybe you can help me out here. I have been having similar problems, in that my screensavers worked fine for about 3 months, then suddenly disappeared from the KDE control panel, althogh they are still in the rigth directory. I have applied the "Mandrake feature" patch, but still no go. The only thing that works is to create a symlink to home/user/.kde/share/applink-mdk/.hidden/ScreenSavers from /usr/share/applink-mdk/.hidden/SreenSavers. This works OK until I reboot, when the link disappears into another dimension. Any idea's how to get the link I create to stay in one place.
Thanks

For those who are asking questions about Xscreensaver, I use X-screensaver in KDE. It is not listed in the KDE screensaver menus, but I like the Xscreensavers, and I am not impressed with what comes with KDE :)

NOTES:
I use MandrakeLinux 10.0 Community
I have the xscreensaver, xscreensaver-extrusion, and xscreensaver-gl packages installed.

If you want xscreensavers which use Open GL, you will have to install the first and third package. the extrusion package is a new screensaver which I have not yet tried.

First, I uncheck the option to start the screensaver automatically in kcc [The KDE Control Center] / Look and feel / Screensaver.

Then in a terminal window as root, do the following commands:

cd ~/.kde/Autostart
echo #! /bin/sh > start-xscreensaver.sh
echo xscreensaver -nosplash >> start-xscreensaver.sh
chmod +x ./start-xscreensaver.sh
xscreensaver-demo

This last command brings up the xscreensaver configuration window. Here you can select the xscreensaver you wish to use, and configure it, or you can configure all/any of the xscreensavers, and select random etc. The available options are fairly self explanatory.

HTH,

I'm sure this is an inane question, but did you make sure to make your symlink as root from the command line (as suggested by Zipled earlier in this thread), rather than dragging a link in the KDE gui? Sometimes it doesn't recognize things permanently that way, i've noticed when i try to delete stuff or whatnot.

Other than that, you might want to make your symlink and then log out of kde, rather than rebooting, then log back in and see if your change is still there. Good luck!

Better call it screen-burners...
The best way to save your screen is to turn it off... not a very useful tip, I know.
