Installing Mandrakelinux 10.1 Offical
Hello,
I have just finished installing Mandrakelinux 10.1 Official. After the boot selection comes up where I select l "Linux," I am taken to a black screen where I have to enter my username. I didn't create a password during installation so there was no need to enter one, aside from pressing enter. "(username@localhost username)$" is the message I get now, and from here I do not know what to type. I typed "xstart" as a friend previously instructed, and I got the message, "bash:xstart:command not found." I do not know what to do from here on, and my friend has run out of ideas. He suggested that my Graphics Card setup during the installation should be set to default, so I just clicked next and it said something like, "Would you like Xorg to boot," so I clicked yes and continued. "Graphics Card - frame buffer." That's what it said in the setup. As well, KDE was my desktop that was set to run, but in the installation I selected them all, but in the end setup KDE should have loaded. Please advise what to do next in order to get my operating system to run properly. Thanks in advanced. -Mo |
the command is "starx" (minus the quotes.) Not sure if you made a typo above or not. You should have created not just a username, but also a password during setup.
Is there a way to create the password and other setting later on?
And starx doesnt work
startx is the command; kdm is another; and gdm is another
startx is generic, kdm is for the KDE window manager, and gdm is for the GNOME window manager any of those should be good shots. to launch kdm/gdm, you should log in as root, or as you user, then type "su" and the root password. Hope this helps. However, something makes me wonder if your initial install wasn't set up properly (during the X windows/GUI install part), because Mandrake should have booted GUI. Most likely, it's just a simple goof, so don't get turned off right away. You'll laugh about it later, trust me. It's probably just a slight oversight on your friend's part, something they've done so much they forgot this time. |
lol yea, that was me...my mistake..I was tired. I thought it was xstart instead of startx. XDDD. lol. my bad :P.

" It did it to me too..but I just restarted and it worked; never had to do the startx part. :/ Weird though. |
startx worked...
now im getting an xorg error or something. during the setup, i went to default and said xorg should start it. "graphics card - frame buffer" it said. but it doesnt work. also, im running ati radeon x700 pro, and selecting ati or radeon from the menu during setup didnt work either... |
i type su after, then pass, then kdm, same error msg...
yeah, kde just cant load, graphical error.... reinstall?
What's the exact error message?
something to do with xorg failing. I never got xorg when I installed, can someone fill me in on what it is? Some sort of graphical manager?
The error message was too long, but it was on the lines of "config failed to load, parser failed, contact x.org.com... Anyway, i am reinstalling and will test the graphics. i have ati readeon x700, but i dont know what to select in the drivers, ati or radeon...
Should I just leave the setup for Graphics Card as "Not Configured"?
I set everything to my radeon card, but when i click test i get "driver failed to load" or something, i have a cd for support, but i cant put that in during install...
