Installing Mandrakelinux 10.1 Offical
Hello,
I have just finished installing Mandrakelinux 10.1 Official. After the boot selection comes up where I select l "Linux," I am taken to a black screen where I have to enter my username. I didn't create a password during installation so there was no need to enter one, aside from pressing enter. "(username@localhost username)$" is the message I get now, and from here I do not know what to type. I typed "xstart" as a friend previously instructed, and I got the message, "bash:xstart:command not found." I do not know what to do from here on, and my friend has run out of ideas. He suggested that my Graphics Card setup during the installation should be set to default, so I just clicked next and it said something like, "Would you like Xorg to boot," so I clicked yes and continued. "Graphics Card - frame buffer." That's what it said in the setup. As well, KDE was my desktop that was set to run, but in the installation I selected them all, but in the end setup KDE should have loaded. Please advise what to do next in order to get my operating system to run properly. Thanks in advanced. -Mo |
the command is "starx" (minus the quotes.) Not sure if you made a typo above or not. You should have created not just a username, but also a password during setup.
|
Is there a way to create the password and other setting later on?
|
And starx doesnt work
|
startx is the command; kdm is another; and gdm is another
startx is generic, kdm is for the KDE window manager, and gdm is for the GNOME window manager any of those should be good shots. to launch kdm/gdm, you should log in as root, or as you user, then type "su" and the root password. Hope this helps. However, something makes me wonder if your initial install wasn't set up properly (during the X windows/GUI install part), because Mandrake should have booted GUI. Most likely, it's just a simple goof, so don't get turned off right away. You'll laugh about it later, trust me. It's probably just a slight oversight on your friend's part, something they've done so much they forgot this time. |
lol yea, that was me...my mistake..I was tired. I thought it was xstart instead of startx. XDDD. lol. my bad :P.

" It did it to me too..but I just restarted and it worked; never had to do the startx part. :/ Weird though. |
startx worked...
now im getting an xorg error or something. during the setup, i went to default and said xorg should start it. "graphics card - frame buffer" it said. but it doesnt work. also, im running ati radeon x700 pro, and selecting ati or radeon from the menu during setup didnt work either... |
i type su after, then pass, then kdm, same error msg...
|
yeah, kde just cant load, graphical error.... reinstall?
|
What's the exact error message?
|
something to do with xorg failing. I never got xorg when I installed, can someone fill me in on what it is? Some sort of graphical manager?
|
The error message was too long, but it was on the lines of "config failed to load, parser failed, contact x.org.com... Anyway, i am reinstalling and will test the graphics. i have ati readeon x700, but i dont know what to select in the drivers, ati or radeon...
|
Should I just leave the setup for Graphics Card as "Not Configured"?
|
I set everything to my radeon card, but when i click test i get "driver failed to load" or something, i have a cd for support, but i cant put that in during install...
|
failed to load a "once-only module" "no devices found for radeon." i need to have the driver cd in to make radeon work i think. or i jus leave the graphics card setting to "not configured". right now, it sais "no screens found" and "kdm" doesnt load. "unknowm command" something like that

I know I am replying several times to my own posts, but I have installed this software several times, each time changing the configuration of the Graphics, and nothing works! Please, I need to make X.org and my Radeon X700 Work. Somehow, I cannot load a module for my radeon, it won't recognize or something. Please, help!
Would an Xorg update from ati help? Burning the rpm to a floppy maybe, will the graphics setup then recognize it during installation? https://support.ati.com/ics/support/...ge&folderID=27 |
The updated ATI RPM's are available via Thac's site.
Search for the word THAC in this forum for the URL. |
Where's THAC's site? What ATI Driver do I need... X.Org or X.Free, or all? How do I load them, onto a floppy or onto a cd during installation to pick them up? Or, right after installation, in the black screen, do I type something to receieve the drivers? In that case, what do I put in Graphics Configuration in setup before that. Mind you all, I haven't even got onto the desktop, the black screen is pre-desktop, can't load desktop cause of no drivers...
|
Search this forum and yea shall find.
|
I did... I found http://rpm.nyvalls.se/graphics10.1.html but cant find ATI drivers... Do i need xorg or xfree? link please. :D
Isnt there anyway to point to the a drive and choose a driver, downloaded all cfree/xorg drivers from ati, need to install them in SETUP, right now, im just at the black screen after startx. "no screens found, etc" |
I don't use ATI boards with Linux but if you check the other threads you'll find that you can install Xorg from that site which will work with the ATI drivers from ATI's site.
|
1) THAC's site doesn't show any ATI drivers, only nVIDIA :(
2) I don't know how to install any drivers from Linux Console... |
fglx are all ATI. I believe.
Check the other thread where instructions were posted. |
