Disabling artsd ...?

Hi ppl, I have been using Mandriva LE 2005 for some time now, and artsd is still behaving odd. Is there a way to disable it so it won't run at boot? Because I sometimes can't run video files in mplayer, without killing artsd first, then other times amarok freezes, then, at other times, artsd takes up 60%+ of my CPU (P4 2.4c), and the CPU temperature starts to rise too much...I've checked other posts about artsd, and some people are saying that one should disable artsd in KDE Control center...I've looked in the menus but can't find the control center anywhere...all I can find under tabs Menu/System/Configuration/KDE/Sound/ is an option to run Sound System, but when I open that, I can't disable artsd anywhere. So can someone please advise me how to disable so artsd won't auto-run at boot? Thanks in advance, Solagen

You disable artsd for individual users, through the sound configuration utility in kcontrol (or configure your desktop on Mandrake).

hmm, i ran kcontrol and it started outputting:

root@localhost bin]# kcontrol

QPixmap: Cannot create a QPixmap when no GUI is being used
QPixmap: Cannot create a QPixmap when no GUI is being used
Link points to "/tmp/kde-root"

kbuildsycoca running...
Reusing existing ksycoca

kbuildsycoca: WARNING: '/var/lib/menu-xdg/applications/Mandrakelinux/Multimedia/Sound/amarok.desktop' specifies undefined mimetype/servicetype 'audio/x-sid'
...

and more, so i ctrl-c it ... I tried configuring my desktop (right-click on desktop and select configure Desktop) but couldn't find anything that even remotely resembled options for sounds:confused:

Now, I found the "right" Configure Your Desktop (= Menu/system/Configuration) option, but at the Sound tab, i have set Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (= alsa?), but that still doesnt make artsd stop running after reboot.

There should be an option to disable the sound server somewhere in the sound settings. I can't give you the precise details coz I am not using KDE right now.
