New LinuxQuestions.org Contest - Win a Free LQ T-Shirt

It's time for another LinuxQuestions.org Contest! This is your chance to win a free LQ T-shirt. The shirt in question is not one from the LQ store, but one that was only available as a *very* select giveaway at the LQ LinuxWorld booth. So, how do you participate and win this great prize? Simply by spreading the word about LQ. The 2 members who refer the most members between now and May 14th (midnight LQ time) will each win a prize. There are a couple simple rules. Any form of cheating will disqualify you. This includes signing up for multiple accounts, having people signup for accounts they knowingly won't use, etc. We do have measures in place to help detect this. Also *any* form of spamming for this will *immediately* disqualify you from this and every contest we ever have (really, please - don't spam. The problem is big enough and no one likes a spammer). Those unpleasantries aside, start spreading the word ;)

Good Luck!

A few additional items.

- You can check the status of the contest here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/contest.php
- You can use the following URL to automatically get credit for a referral (where xx is replaced with your userid): http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...?referrerid=xx
- There are many easy ways to spread the word including your blog, telling people you know (don't forget to tell them to fill in the "Referrer" field with your username, email, etc.).

Thanks,

Jeremy,
You mispelled referral.

I was hoping that by pointing out your mistakes, I'd automatically get credit in this contest...? :D

jeremy 04-15-2005 08:34 AM

D'oh - thanks, it's been corrected.

I hope you are having a joke as you misspelt "misspelled".
Yours etc,

sorry but mispell is correct, and so is misspell.
i don't know why, but that's the way it is...

SchadeBoy 04-15-2005 11:36 AM

misspelt?

student04 04-15-2005 11:51 AM

haha wow so off topic....

If you can understand what they're saying, then there's no need to go back and correct a single letter in a word. Think of all the non-native english speakers (as an example) using this forum. I'm guessing they try their best to write correctly, yet you don't need to tell them about they're spelling errors, when you've understood what they said. Plain and simple.

simplebob 04-15-2005 12:23 PM

I'm with student04 on that one!

Cheechi 04-15-2005 12:24 PM

misspelt: usually people with heavy dialects/accents or those who had english teachers with such a condition. those who speek poor Queen's english (aka most of the non-american english world) would find this to be marginally correct.

mispell: only correct because of the digital age. you will find most often due to someone's boss being frequently wrong, due to everyone doing it, or due to other factors that many internal double letters have been optionally dropped, making both spellings of misspell or mispell correct in the eyes of those who make digital dictionaries (dictionary.com, yahoo, MS word, etc).

i prefer misspell, as it is the only correct form of the word.

Mispell is a bastardisation of misspell. It certainly isnt in my oxford english. I think responding was a bad idea but I doubt very much whether SchadeBoy is currently iterating through every post in LQ with a spell checker. I think he/she was being tongue-in-cheek. At least, I hope so....

Most correct, Snecklifter. I usually don't make comments about spelling. I was more or less making a joke and should not, in any way, have been taken seriously.

I am an instructor at a local college. I constantly tell my students that I will not mark them down for one or two misspelled words in their papers. I teach computer courses, not English or writing courses. I'll get anal about it if it's a real problem in a paper, though. More often than not, spelling errors are due to not hitting the keys correctly - ie fat-fingering the keyboard.

I'm far more likely to get annoyed with incorrect punctuation usage than spelling. These days, it seems people have forgotten how to use the period key. I truly do not understand how people can write sentences without ending them properly. How am I supposed to get the point of one's statement if I can't even tell where the statement begins or ends?

Oh, and I'll take he, too. :)

jeremy 04-15-2005 12:43 PM

OK, back on topic please.

Thanks,

hey jeremy ,
thats a good contest
but i keep on asking students at the seminar that i keep on organizing to register for LQ!
my next one is today.
and if many of them register from our university then it will be done through a single IP that our university has for Proxy .
guess, I will be disqualified then??

Tell them to help out, post questions, answer questions...

masand 04-15-2005 05:00 PM

yes i know that we have many members who just register for the sake of registering
but what can be done in that case???

Well, you do have to have distinct email addresses when registering, so we doubt you'd be creating a dozen or more aliases from different hosts just to get around the rules.
Refer your friends, I'm sure we'll see no problems.

merpal 04-15-2005 08:35 PM

With the number of gmail invites in circulation, you could easily create a ton of addresses. :/

True but 10 or so different .edu email addresses from a universitys IP Block address would seem more legit than 10 or so referrals all from gmail accounts and the same IP Blocks.. etc.. ;)

frob23 04-16-2005 03:09 AM

LOL, I am sooo going to have to refer at least three people. I'm not concerned about winning the shirt but has anyone seen the winner so far?

At this moment the winning member has been inactive for about two years! Wouldn't that be sad? Someone having the most referrals and not even knowing about it.

:p

jeremy 04-16-2005 08:58 AM

masand, no you would not be disqualified. IP address is only one thing that will be looked at.

Actually I think the only reason the member google is getting referrals is that people are inputting the actual referral on how they found LQ.org. It seems most will find it by google itself, so they are putting that as their referral not knowingly that it is an actual member as well.

I try to think outside of the box at times.. now where's my biscuit?

trickykid 04-16-2005 11:30 AM

Actually its obvious when clicking on google's referrals, since the contest there has been 2 referrals but overall he has over 600.. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...date=&enddate=

:)

masand 04-16-2005 11:34 AM

so what if Mr google claims his award??

he has done nothing wrong that will disqualify him

Very true, picked the right name to be a generic type referral. ;)

jeremy 04-16-2005 12:17 PM

In this case, with the member not being active for almost 2 years and the members siging up clearly not referred by the member, we'll pick the next 2 people on the list.

I'm curious as to the reason for this latest drive for members?

It doesn't seem to be a problem for LQ.org in atracting new members, or could nobody think of what to do with two spare t-shirts? ;)

jeremy 04-18-2005 06:49 PM

CragStar - just having a little fun ;)

For the same reasons that any website tries to grow. In LQ's case, the more members there are, the more information can be exchanged, and the more useful LQ will become to all. -- J.W.

Shh.. LQ.org is trying to take over the world. Once they become a member, we own them from there on out.. ;)

Brain Drop 04-20-2005 07:09 PM

I for one welcome our new LQ.org overlords.

absolutely brilliant.

For more of this man and his staggering talent, watch him paint a picture at yakov.com

(I only found it because I did not want to spell his name wrong, considering the original intent of the thread)

masand 05-07-2005 12:48 PM

hi there

i again introduced LQ at my group meet today
and some of them registered also
but some problem was there , they could not register simultaneously from our IT center
thats because i think that they were using diskless cleints so they were sharing a same server

so they had to take chances One by One in registering at LQ
regards

jeremy 05-08-2005 09:11 AM

As long as they all had unique email addresses, they should have been able to register without problem. You would need to delete all cookies from one user before registering as another, though.

--jeremy

masand 05-08-2005 09:19 AM

yes the problem was due to cookies i think because
when one of them registered with one email-id

the second one could not register as it was showing the status that he is already logged in with the previous one's user name

so the logout option allowed the other user to clear cookies and register

Hi Jeremy
Isn't it a good idea to show no. of Referrals on member information like no of posts, reviews etc.?

jeremy 05-10-2005 08:56 PM

The info is shown on your profile page.
