I think it would be helpful to me to see others found a post helpful. I'll certainly use this feature. I've been away from Linux for awhile, but over the Christmas break, will be installing (and trying to do some recovery) so I know I'll be visiting LQ a LOT in the future. :)

It would also be helpful to see if the post was not applicable to a certain distribution of Linux...i.e., if something works for Ubuntu but not for Fedora.

Different tack to just yes or no.
 

There is a lot of discussion on the positive/negative aspects of this idea. How about this one? The thanks will increase the thankee's count, now just extend this if possible. Create a link from the "Thanked:nnn" note to the posts the member was thanked for. Something like "My Discussions" seen on some forums.

This way the bad posts fall by the wayside anyway and it is a shortcut to the good posts, no matter the topic. You may just be reminded of a solution you've been looking for for two days already. Would categorizing be very difficult?

There are many topics which cannot be handled by guru's only, nobody has that kind of time. I've seen many a solution to my questions in posts completely unrelated to what I was interested in at the time.

Perfection you won't find anyway, so what is the terrible sin in a bad post? I've learned a lot out of mine. I've also seen heaps of kindness from people with qualifications in this field very far ahead of mine.

Maybe I'm wrong, but as I see it these forums are there to keep the juices flowing. You get fighter pilots and you get barnstormers.

i think can too easily find yourself with too many "ratings" types?
if nobody has commented in this thread... about this following, then:
the best aspect of a rating is that it allows (registered) viewer to rate an old (but perhaps good) post without bumping.

btw regarding "thanks" (either via click or by "manually posting"): sometimes one won't know whether (and which) advice succeeds, until weeks or months later.

Since the thanks feature has been partially removed i.e. (Name of the person who thanked is not shown), I as usual click the thanks button and after that I have to write a thanks note w.r.t the person who helped me, coz. he should know that I was not unappreciative !

What I want to say is that, by removing that name showing feature, amount of work has increased a bit !!

I am not lazy, but many times the internet is too slow !

Thanks anishakaul for this post and for your attitude. Indeed being thanked for helpful hints is much appreciated and encourages to keep up the "work". To extend your concept, I'd notice that not always a click on the thumb-up is followed by a post, so many times I wonder if a post was thanked by the original poster of the thread, by one of the members who replied thereafter or by someone else. Just a matter of curiosity - I admit - but the earlier would be my preferred option instead of the anonymity.

Edit: it was me who clicked the thumb-up of your post just a couple of seconds ago! ;)

There was no need to mention it ! I did understand that ! :)

Lets hope Jeremy understands these issues...

When I try to integrate the posts from anishakaul's #66 to the end I'd like to propose something like an integration of everybodies ideas:

Thumbs up symbols brings up an editing window, already prepared with some headlines or some such like:

Solution found in Post #
Followed it to the letter :):
Additional tasks performed:
Diverging path to solution (building on suggestion):
Thanks to everybody participating (or whatever nice phrase here).

Everybody else uses the "did you find this post helpful => yes". Would that be close to the intended proceeding?

Yea another pathetic feature, I wondered why I had stayed away from the forums.

No one is forced to use the thanks or the "helpful post" features. Is this your thing? Do you plan to return annually and say "it's all crap"?

Having both is confuzing imo. I liked it much more when there were just the thumbs up, along with the people who had thanked below the post.
Doesnt thanking imply this post is helpful? Also as i see in this thread, which i admit i didnt read to its fullest, there are (at least) 2 replies marked as "LQ members have rated this post as the most helpful post in this thread."
edit: And now it appeared on my own post too. Its obviously still under construction.

If you look more closely, you'll notice that "this post" is a link, which takes you to the one that has actually been voted the most helpful. The post above the message box is irrelevant... it typically appears under the first post on every page.

I do not know if this is what I am going to do, I returned hoping that these "features" had been removed and that they would have stopped cluttering forum post yet this is not the case.
