Old electrician, Linux Newbie

Hi LQ folks,

Old guy here. Most folks as old as I am need to get their grandkids to log them in to FacePalm. I have been at it a while.

Worked at GM, lucky enough to get training on computer systems back in the day. Started out maintaining and repairing IBM-XTs and DEC Mini Computers

Anybody remember MS-DOS 2.0? EDLIN? DEC-RSX11M? OS-8? PDP-8 computers that can trip a 20 amp breaker trying to power up?

Retired now, but still work at the hey-buddy computer repair shop for friends.

I can find my way around Microsoft with only an occasional assist from Google .

I don't get much use from my Novell training these days :).

I am pretty new to Linux. Having a lot of experience with hardware helps, but I pretty much abandoned the command line when Windows 3.0 came along. :(

I have a new fast PC with an 8 core CPU, and now trying to run Ubuntu in Hyper-V. I will prolly be around here asking questions for a while.

Welcome aboard. Hope to see more posts reporting on your adventures with Linux. It's nice being able to get under the hood, and Linux allows you to do just that. With your electrical background, some home automation projects may be an interesting avenue to explore...
