Has anyone mentioned VirtualDub, and some of its modified versions, VirtualDubMod and NanDub - Excellecnt little AVI editing applications - I've not found a Linux video file editing app to live up to them yet.

Any of the major tax prep software applications (H&R Block, Kiplingers etc).

A few others would be:
- Adobe Illustrator
- Adobe Photoshop
- Dreamweaver
- Any good golf game (old links ls series or the new PGA Tour games)

I used photoshop since version 3 and up through CS2, Xara Pro, can not be classified simply as either a vector or a raster graphics program, it allows for full utilization of both types of graphic arts in the same program and in the same file. I have been doing print graphics (professionally) since the early 90's and web graphics of and on pretty much my whole life. Xara is misunderstood because the user interface is deceptively simple, which is fine by me cause it keeps the price down. There is absolutely nothing in Photoshop you can't do in Xara Pro (which is $129 USD) there are many things in xara you can't do in photoshop or illustrator though, transparency is the biggest thing that comes to mind, adobe products can *almost* do a graded transparency (linear only) xara's transparency tools will blow you away if you learn much about them. (again I'm not talking about the open source version here) also Xara can use all (that I know of) photoshop filters currently on the market, and applies them faster to the same image on the same machine. Anyway, I shouldn't argue as anyone that simply calls xara a vector program has not informed themselves in the first place and my points won't hold ground with someone who doesn't take the time to inform themselves.
A side note about the filters comment above, xara also dynamically reapplies photoshop filters as you resize / transform elements. There's no waiting for the stupid preview window to catch up with you as all changes are dynamically applied to the source much faster than adobe ever does anything to the preview window.

ChemDraw and Chem3D (programs for chemical structure drawing and analysis). Those are the only tools that still keep me locked under Windows.

3D Studio Max, Motion Builder and ZBrush :jawa:

Seriously, Sun makes an excellent piece of software called Star Office if open office doesn't suffice.

First of all, MS Office is not in any way malware or a virus.

Secondly, the purpose of this thread is (as stated in the opening post)
Quote:

This thread is for letting vendors know that there is interest in porting one of their programs to Linux
Nowhere in the opening post does it say that this is a thread to condemn other people's choice's, insult anyone who's favorite programs don't all happen to be exactly the same as yours, spread malicious misinformation about programs that don't happen to be your personal favorite, or in any way insult other members or their choices.

I thank you for protecting the thread and all, I was making an allusion to the FACT that MS Office has been targeted by malicious hackers for YEARS now and that most forms of MS Office are highly susceptible to bringing virii and malware into your system. Specifically because of the access they give documents to the operating system at large. It is much easier to deliver a virus to a computer with MS Office installed than without, this is the point I was making.
I apologize if my post came out as insulting to anyone in particular this was not my aim. I'll know better than to try to have fun on LQ anymore.
Secondly, I apologize for making jokes in a thread where *obviously* the lack of explicit request for a joking / bantering tone would imply a total exclusion of all joking. I'm sorry that I missed this most important rule. No jokes unless the thread starter explicitly asks people to have fun. To the starter of the thread, I'm sorry for joking in the non-joking thread.

Oh and to everyone else watching this thread, I'm sorry for the off topic posts that have come as a result of me being stupid enough to try a joke.

Software

There was a discussion about MS Office, so I would like to express my opinion about that: Open Office.org is a perfect office suite, and it has everything user needs (at least in my opinion).
At least now (after using mandriva Linux for 6 month and Slackware for 1 month) I miss only one application: ICQ client. For example, it's probably impossible to send files using Kopete messenger, there's always a problem with authorization, no possibility to edit ICQ user info... The same situation is in GAIM messenger.

Good News

Whether or not this has already been posted I don't know.

Nero has been ported to Linux, by Nero itself. One wonders what functionalty differences (if any) there are to be found.

definantly MS Office. Oss has yet to find a good relacment for many things. Just try inserting an equation in to OO.org. Its quite a challenge. And headers and footer. (well those arent fair argument, i use Latex for my text processing Needs.) And want to do spread sheets. Nothing comes close to what excel can do.

Mathmetica. WinEdt. and Ableton Live. <-- nothing i have ever used beats this as a audio processing program.

And in the other direction, i would like to see KDevelop on windows.

What else... Net Tracer, Killwatch, NetView, Good ati drivers, drivers for the high end Sound Blaster cards. Canon Pixma ip1500 drivers. WinModem Drivers. Grand Theft Auto all

and a big one Itunes. and Winamp(sorry VLC you come close, but winamp is just so much easier to use)

PowerDVD, Amplitube, Multitrack Studio...

I need to stop now.

And i aske some one else. They said IE and Windows Media

Isn't Mathmatica already ported? I have the engine and a Wxwidgets frontend to it. Is this the same thing or different? Also there's always MatLab which is awesome.
