warcraft 3 on wine says "Access Violation"

the title pretty much says it all

i am using wine 20031212; i installed warcraft 3 successfully, renamed my movies directory, downloaded and placed a warcraft 3 version 1.0 patch

when i try to run War3.exe (using wine -- War3.exe -- -opengl, wine War3.exe -- -opengl, wine War3.exe, etc) a screen comes up, but then i get an errror about an Access Violation, memory referenced at 000...x323... could not be read

has anyone else encountered this problem? i am assuming it is either a bug in wine or my config has not been setup properly for this game

any help appreciated

*edit: i just read somewhere that this is a problem with the game, so i tried updating; however when i try to run it, it hangs! has anyone been able to run warcraft 3 updates in wine and in which version?

okay, problem solved!

after fidling with Red Alert in wine, i ended up enabling dsound in my wine config, and to my surprise, sound actually worked on red alert!

from there, i had this crazy idea to try warcraft 3 again, and amazingly enought, it ran, 3d, sound, and all!

to get warcraft 3 running, i enabled 3 options in the wine config under the dsound section: hardware emulation, and the 2 options dealing with the first sound device /dev/dsp

i also put in an option about running war3.exe in 800x600 mode near the bottom of my config

so far so good! however, i must still note that the same error message does appear when exiting the game, but hasn't affected the actual game yet

also, i am still not sure if the patch for warcraft 3 actually updated anything: i used two fixed exe's, one for version 1.0 and another for 1.11 and both reported their respective versions; if this causes a problem i will post back here!
