Unix or Linux?
 

If you use Microsoft Office on a computer running Windows XP, can you use the same software on a computer running the Unix or Linux operating system?

Cut short: you mean, can you run MS Office on Linux or some Unix? Yes and no, both :) using Wine ("windows emulator", if you like) it is said you can run native MS Office on Linux (Unix systems are quite alike, so on Unix too). OR you could install OpenOffice, which does quite a lot of the stuff MS Office does - OpenOffice can open and save Microsoft Office files (though there are some limitations; macros, for example, and there are some small things that don't seem to get saved/read correctly yet). Or you could run some VMware product to run Windows inside your Linux installation. There are multiple ways to get the job done, but yes - you can use Microsoft Office, or some other product like it, on Linux (or Unix) systems.

EDIT: the "no" part of that means that if you use Office a lot, macros in the documents, and want exactly that MS Office on Linux/Unix, it probably won't happen easily (except for VMware). and the "yes" part means you can, with little effort, run programs like MS Office, or some emulators that run the original Office.

I have installed CrossOver Office just to do that: running MSOffice so I can still run the macros in the Office documents. That was succesful. At least all my macros were running fine. That doesn't necessarely mean *ALL* macros will run fine of course.
