why is there no graphics driver mentioned?

it's possible that ubuntu/gnome balks at the outdatedness of hardware accelaration.

As i mentioned before, my knowledge in Linux is very low. Can you translate that to English please: What drivers, what is INXI? Can this be correct, and if yes how?

The operating system can be run of the installation medium, whether DVD or USB: you just let it boot up instead of going straight to install. If it works, then there was a problem in the installation. If it doesn't, then either you have a bad download or a hardware problem. It's just a gut feeling, but with so many unrelated problems I'd suspect either the download or the installation.

Incidentally, a dual-core 64-bit processor at 3GHz is not inadequate for running Linux, and you do not need antiX! I sometimes wonder if people who reply have actually read the whole post…

So, run Ubuntu off the installation medium and report back.

On that page there are a few different mem RAM, ranging from 2gb to 4gb and 667hz to 800hz. What is the max that I can install and work safely on my PC? The bigger the mem the better, but what will be the max that the mother board can take? Obviously I would like to get the 800hz, but....?

According to https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us...0-mhz-fsb.html you can use a pair of 4GB DDR2-800, which is also called PC2-6400, for a total installed RAM of 8GB.

Thank you again for your time. Guess what, eBay doesn't deliver to SA. I order that already through AMAZON. It will take 2 to 3 weeks to get to the SA post office in Johannesburg (estimated time). From there I expect it to take about 1 or 2 weeks to get to the PO of my area (about 10kms from the Johannesburg main PO). It would be faster is I start walking now, get the items and walk back to SA. Technology is not everywhere. Still running on sneakernet. I will report to the forum as soon I have the RAM running on my PC.

Thank you David, as you read on this thread I am going to increase the mem of the PC. But coming next week I will also give a shot to your recommendation. I am a bit fed up with the performance of the PC (Ubuntu or hardware) and really want to sort this out. After all the recommendations and read the comments in this thread, I am under the impression that increasing the mem will give a boost to the performance of the PC, whether that will kill my problems remains to be seen. I will report back as soon I follow your idea.

Depends where the delivery comes from.
If I (Northern Europe) order from USA or China, it can also take weeks. Physical limitations etc. Not only South Africa. Airplane shipping would cost more than the RAM. Has nothing to do with technology.
