The operating system can be run of the installation medium, whether DVD or USB: you just let it boot up instead of going straight to install. If it works, then there was a problem in the installation. If it doesn't, then either you have a bad download or a hardware problem. It's just a gut feeling, but with so many unrelated problems I'd suspect either the download or the installation.
Incidentally, a dual-core 64-bit processor at 3GHz is not inadequate for running Linux, and you do not need antiX! I sometimes wonder if people who reply have actually read the whole post…
So, run Ubuntu off the installation medium and report back.
