UBUNTU 18.04

I already updated from UBUNTU 15, to 16, to 17. Never after those updates had I to reinstall the printer: it was all done automatically. Never before had any consistent problems with the net, or playing videos or playing sound tracks: all adjustments required by the upgrades, were done without any interventions or adjustments of mine. Never had an app, like the browser or youtube and some others, crashed the whole system in a way that only cutting the power is the only solution to get out of the crash (lately I learned about using REISUB).
Until I installed 18.04; the DAY that I did that, my happy days with UBUNTU come to an end.
-- Trouble with sound in a way that I had to take the PC to a workshop to fix something that I still do not know what, to get the sound to work. I spent hours and hours searching the net and following all tips that I encountered; all to no avail. I was told by that workshop that the drivers were the wrong ones???? Well, they fix it and I got the sound up.
-- Can't get the printer to work still today; after trying many many shortcuts, tips and other advises that I found by searching the net; to print anything today, I have to use my Windows laptop.
-- When playing a youtube's video 3 or 4 times out of 10, I get the message "if playback doesn't start shortly, try restarting the device": this to me sounds like a joke, a sad one: how can an app (youtube) crash the system? Then it works nicely for 3 or 4 or 5 days. I never experienced this sort of trouble before, not even with Windows (yes Windows NT used to do the same: an app crashing the whole system; that problem stopped 99% with the release of Windows 2000 and all versions after that).
-- After power up, it takes probably double the time it used to take for the system to go online, sometimes more; a good 4 or 5 times since installation of 18.04, my PC crashed at power up trying to go online; I had to power it out and start all over again. I remember last UBUNTU 17, the system used to go online in a flat 10 to 20 secs. if not less. Now if I get it in a minute, minute and a half, it is really fast.
In my experience, I just can't wait the day that 18.04 is out of the window.
I am sure that many of you will say: get a new hardware. OK I accept that some of the problems could be hardware related, but why all that happened after the installation of 18.04? Right from the word GO? If it was hardware, why so many different problems? Since my first installation of UBUNTU 15.(??) I never experienced anything like this.

Kind regards,

Tony

You might consider further posting information about the computer you are using -- manufacturer, processor, RAM, disks, graphics card, sound card, disk drives, printer, ... . A source for all this that I use regularly is the terminal command 'sudo lshw'. Also, how old is the machine?

hydrurga 09-03-2018 09:33 AM

I'm sorry to hear all that, ynotamil, but you need to concentrate on one issue at at time, and probably start one thread for each. That way we can focus on solving the individual issues that you are experiencing.

Hello, thanks for the reply. Been away for 2 months
Here is the reply to lshw. The PC is old, around 10 to 15 YO. Just replaced the processor to a 64 bits, about 8 to 10 months ago, just before I upgraded to UBUNTU 18. Please help me to get the sound working. When I posted originally I had my headphone BT working, Guess what, even that stopped all together. No sound at all, now.

Hello everyone.
Of the problems that I reported before in this forum some time ago, none has gone (all still well and alive on my system). I have done nothing to repair them because I just don't know what to do. All the solution that I found are useless, the majority too complicated for me to handle. My knowledge in LINUX is not that advanced, very limited. The problems that I currently experience started when I upgrade to release 18 and since my system deteriorated with the last 2 software updates (the bluetooth search and pairing is pathetic, the sound works when it feels like and as good as it likes, the windows displayed on the screen freeze very often), can anyone help me take my system back to the previous LTS release of UBUNTU, which I don't even know which one is? For starters, would anyone discourage me to do that because of some technical issues, if any? I did some search on the net but I got nowhere, hence my request here for any help.
Tony

How much freespace is on your / filesystem?

Have you tried booting 18.04 live media? If sound works correctly using it, then you'll know the problem is in your installed configuration, not a problem with hardware. If you know it's not a hardware problem, you might find it simpler to do a fresh installation than to find and fix the problem.

Please provide output from
Code:

inxi -Gxxb
run within Gnome terminal or Xterm. It's a more concise description of you hardware, generally more useful for diagnosis of software issues than the mass of detail provided by lshw.

A quick view of the output you posted on your hardware for that machine, all I can say is good luck running Ubuntu 18.04 on a 10-15 year old computer. Technical issues on 'downgrading' Ubuntu are explained at the link below. Although possible, the likelihood of success is slim according to the site below but they do have detailed instructions if you want to try it. Never done it myself.

if that is true (i didn't verify) then you definitely need to choose a dedicated distro for very old hardware - i'm thinking antiX, installed to the hard drive.
i think you want the base release (or full if you have enough space on your hard drive).
https://antixlinux.com/download/
unfortunately their websites are all over the place atm and i can't find suitable installation instructions.

mrmazda 04-20-2019 03:19 AM

I have a Biostar motherboard with the same G41/NM10/ICH7 chipset as OP's 9 year old motherboard, and a CPU modestly faster, 3.06GHz E7600 with 1066 FSB compared to 3.00GHz E5700 with 800 FSB. There's no way mine needs to be stuck with a distro designed for old hardware just yet. I have Mageia, Fedora, Buster, Stretch, Tumbleweed, Leap and more running on it, with Plasma, KDE3 and TDE DEs. Unless Gnome is more demanding than Plasma by a full order of magnitude, which I doubt it comes close to, if not less demanding, his hardware is should be just as capable of running 18.04 as 16.04, unless it has suffered a mysterious hardware failure coincident with his upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04.

He should be able to benefit significantly by retiring his two PC5300 1GB RAM sticks, replacing them with a pair of PC6400 4GB, once the basic problem is solved, maybe before. His GPU shares system RAM, so he's really running less than 2GB.

As I already implied, freespace may be part of the problem. His DiamondMax HD, which IIRC was a model not known for longevity, is only 40GB, which having been in use though 9 years and through multiple OS upgrades, could be getting seriously crowded. Replacing it with a 120GB or more SSD could seriously speed things up.

My system disk is 41gb and is 46% full. I have a 2 tb for data/photos, videos that is nearly empty
You also mentioned "Have you tried booting 18.04 live media?" No, I haven't, don't know what it is. How do I do it? My browser is TOR, do a bit of emails, my ONLY games are PATIENCE/SOLITAIRE card games only; no war games with heavy graphics, never did. I watch on youtube many videos, movies. I don't think the hardware is overloaded at all. Maybe short memory, kind if by mistake I double click TOR and get 2 instances running, then I fell the PC goes very slow, some screen freeze; I kill one instance of the browser and all goes normal.

Thank you for your time. I will try that and report if any progress.

if that is true (i didn't verify) then you definitely need to choose a dedicated distro for very old hardware - i'm thinking antiX, installed to the hard drive.
i think you want the base release (or full if you have enough space on your hard drive).

unfortunately their websites are all over the place atm and i can't find suitable installation instructions.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will pursue that and will report any progress.

Thank for your time and the comments. The one abt the memory is very much my 1st priority, but that stuff is only available here in South Africa as second hand. No easy to find, but definitely a must. The HDD was tested, initialized when I installed 18 and did not get any errors. But,yes its old. I will keep my eyes open, looking for any trouble on that field.

Before switching to some other distro, I suggest giving TDE on 18.04 a try. Gnome can be removed if space is indeed limited. Most of my *buntu installations are running TDE (none Gnome), including those on single core PCs with only 1GB of RAM.

I don't see South Africa excluded on https://www.ebay.com/itm/302992973141
